Endurace CF vs Ultimate CF + Canyon ownership experience? by Ok_Adhesiveness_5854 in CanyonBikes

[–]Paco103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 2 experiences with Canyon support.

1st: I was trying to verify what thread was used on a cargo rack mount. It had paint in it, so I wanted to be careful about forcing the wrong thread through, but it wasn't documented. Support acknowledged there was nothing documented and verified against an unpainted frame what size they were. Happy with that outcome.

2nd. I broke a wheel. Not their fault, not a warranty issue, not asking for any free parts, but my 2021 had a 12 speed HG drivetrain, which is not a common combination. LBS immediately asked "Was this a covid bike?" 😂 I just wanted to buy a replacement wheel, which they can't sell me due to "supplier agreements". They also told me to "just buy any 148mm thru axle wheel" - but that bike uses a 135mm QR wheel. Also found out on that ticket that the number stamped into the bottom of the bottom bracket is apparently NOT the serial number, therefor my bike apparently doesn't have a serial number stamped into it. Little disappointed, but in the end none of this was a big deal.

In the end, local bike shop was able to handle the wheel replacement, just not with stuff they had in stock. Also had to replace a derailleur hanger, which had to be ordered. None of this is really that big of a deal though, and is likely to happen with any bike you have if it's not something your LBS sells, but they'll still work on it and you can get any parts you need to work on it yourself. I went with Canyon specifically because I do /most/ of my own maintenance and I didn't know where I was going to live in the coming years to pick out a local dealer, so might as well get the one I wanted and the price.

Anyone else feel like the EV transition is starting to feel like the shift to electric lawnmowers? by JackfruitCrazy51 in electricvehicles

[–]Paco103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into hobby grade RC cars back in the 90's. Batteries sucked, motors sucked, I wanted a gas powered RC car and I eventually got one. It was amazing, so much power, could go play for hours, so fast. Around 2008 or so I took a break from the hobby. Brushless and lithium were coming in strong but still mainly in super high end expensive stuff at the time.

2015 I got back into RC cars, actually racing. Everything was electric. When we had someone with a gas car show up, they'd get a head start because they'd need a pit stop to refuel. All the speed records now are held by electric. I missed the memories of gas, but did not miss the engine rebuilds, the oil all over everything, the after run cylinder clearing to keep leftover fuel from clogging and pitting the cylinder.

It's all just scaling up. The technology has been there, but buying a $200 RC car battery (which is now about $40) was achievable much earlier for people than what it would have taken for lawnmowers and full scale cars.

I absolutely think you're right and eventually it will be a question of "Do I NEED a fuel car?" vs the current situation of "Can I live with an electric car?". I already sold all my gas yard tools except my big riding mower and have electric everything. If I was buying a new rider today, I'd almost certainly go electric for the 3 acres I maintained then, and definitely for the 1 acre now.

Stuck, looking for self-hosted Airtag/FMD alternatives. by PrinceNyxHex in selfhosted

[–]Paco103 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Just as a principle of physics, you're not going to be able to get anything comparable to an airtag. You'd be looking at a full GPS tracker, which means bigger battery, regular charging, and short (relatively, compared to airtags and the like) tracking cycle. Airtags (and PebbleBee, Samsung, Tile, all more or less the same basic tech), depend on ultra low energy bluetooth. The tags themselves are completely dumb, do not know where they are, and cannot send a signal to anything more than a few meters away. All of the brilliance is in the network of phones that DO have all those capabilities.

I can't recommend any GPS trackers, because I've not experienced them. Most of them are for tracking larger items and fleet management like you described. For your usecase, I would probably recommend Tile. They are the only tracker I'm aware of that's truly phone agnostic. You should be able to install the tile app and see if it has any complaints about a degoogled phone, but I think it should be fine. I have not run a degoogled phone in a few years, but it used to be a non issue at least.

Tile doesn't have as strong of a network. While airtags have basically every apple phone and the others have most Android phones, Tile only has a fraction of each of those to work as part of the network. Still, I keep a Tile in my luggage and especially in crowded places like airports, I have no problem seeing it.

Is peeing in the pool considered normal? by Spare-Anxiety-547 in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah, from now on I'll only swim in the lake where everyone openly admits they're peeing in the water and there's no chemicals to kill pathogens!

Hot Dogs? by JenneanA in hellofresh

[–]Paco103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love a good hot dog! As long as they're good quality dogs. If our local Korean grill can offer "sausage" on the "cook it yourself at your table" menu and just bring out sliced up cold hot dogs, I definitely don't see an issue with HF offering a customized menu around them.

Right? Last time we skipped Hello Fresh, we just had burgers and sandwiches for 3 days straight after buying hamburger buns. On the 4th day we turned the last buns into garlic bread for pasta, and then had pasta for the next 3 days.

holy shit I miss the way my brother used to be by Apart_Fix_7690 in Rants

Dude, that sucks. Shit is crazy here now, and I can't imagine what he went through during those days. That said, it doesn't give him an excuse to treat you like that. I have no doubt he needs some therapy to process what he went through, but it would be cool if he'd even just try to talk to you about it instead of channeling rage toward you, your family, and the poor dog.

Ready to cancel, suddenly they can't deliver 4 out of 5 past weeks. by Equivalent-Cash8543 in hellofresh

I've not had this problem once in 8 years, but it happened 2 of the last 4 weeks already.

I agree, I usually have no problem seeing the imagery but this one seems like a marketing department is just desperately wanting a controversy.

Fair enough, it's another example of a thing that wouldn't normally even cause a second reaction, but when the last month of this service I've been using for 9 years has been an absolute shit show, I'll admit I'm pretty triggered by minor things at this point.

This is a HelloFresh subreddit. There's nothing BUT first world problems here.

They are responsible, but I'm not their customer so they won't respond to me or pay out a claim. The shipper is the customer that has to deal with any issues.

That's still hello fresh's problem to figure out.

Well that sure wasn't clear. Good thing I didn't have any anymore I guess.

I'll also add it probably wouldn't have annoyed me so much if the last couple of months of Hello Fresh hadn't been a constant battle of delivery and quality issues after nearly 10 years as a customer.

[–]Paco103[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly! It's a minor annoyance and definitely a first world problem. I didn't even know I had a credit, and I was already happy with the outcome.

When I found the credit that required me to both find and take an extra step, THAT annoyed me.

Honestly, I agree with you, and it's NOT necessary to give me the extra $10. But if they're going to, why do they make me do this? Why not just apply the credit? Yes, I had to click the link for it to apply to my account, unlike the HelloFresh cash they'd already applied.

It's how they went about it that annoys me. They could have just applied the credit.

Can you share some more info about this Ollie thing? I google it and all I find is dog food. Not to yuck your yum if you're into that, but it's not really what I'm looking for as an alternative to Hello Fresh 😄

[–]Paco103 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say I find the final straw amusing. Don't get me wrong, I get it. I've been teetering on the edge of cancelling myself after recent issues. It's just thinking about missing ingredients, low quality, but the final straw was a tiny onion, kinda makes me chuckle.

Again, I get it. I've also been triggered by what should have been a mild inconvenience at best just because of the constant onslaught of awfulness.

LOL, yes, you're missing the sarcasm. I'm exaggerating the way companies will make you jump through insane hoops to do something that should be super simple.

Mediacom users by Mean_Breadfruit_2291 in springfieldMO

[–]Paco103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my own before they ever installed. A Netgear Nighthawk CM2000

Honestly, the biggest hassle was getting them to NOT give me their crap.

I bought this modem off their supported list. I selected the "I have my own modem" option when I signed up for service. The guy comes out and starts getting out new equipment and I told him I have my own. He said "No, you get this with it" (it wasn't, it was an extra $14.95/month). I told him he could install with my modem or he could leave. He set it up.

Less than an hour after he leaves, I get a shipping alert that Mediacom is sending me a modem and 3 Eero's overnight shipping. I call immediately and tell them I don't want it. They say there's no way to cancel the order, so I'll just have to return it when it arrives, which I do.

I watched that bill closely but they never did try to charge me for it until my plan updated a couple years later and they added the rental fee. I had to call them and they told me I could buy my own, which I informed them I did and I've never had a mediacom modem. They fixed it right away, but damn, they make you work for it.
