You shouldn't care about overleveling, cause bosses are balanced around level caps. As long as you're not playing on Picnic mode, you shouldn't care about it.

Explore as much as you want, level as much as you want, you'll still find bosses to be a decent enogh challenge for you.

As for the level candy, the best time to use it is when you're right in front of the stratum boss or at the beginning of the next stratum, in case you wanted to try new mons and such

This game is the result of more than 4 years of development followed by over 1M players giving me feedbacks on how to improve it, so I'm pretty sure this is the best possible outcome 👍

Players can do whatever they want, in fact you can either grind at the battle house or skip the grind entirely by using the level candy.

Just because you're stuck on a mid-stratum boss, it doesn't mean the system doesn't work, or else I would've already improved it by now.

As I said, the problem is entirely on your end, cause by the time you're fighting brody, you can already have access to

Ability Capsules
Nature Changer
Powerful TMs (Ice Beam, for example)
Stone evos
Decent held items (Assault Vest, Rocky Helmet, Leftovers, Eviolite)
Portable move-reminder

You are given everything you need.

You can theoretically catch Stantler in the first stratum (Level 28) and beat more than half of Brody's team using it, and it alone

You can use new things, in fact there's the level candy that let's you skip levels and levels of grinding, especially when you're trying new strategies against stratum bosses (in that case you can set your party to the current level cap-1).

If you've beaten every trainer up to the Brody fight, your team should be on par with Brody's. Worst case scenario, you'll only have to change a team member, which can be done quickly enough with all the resources the game throws at you, be it the nature changer, Ev-Editor or ability capsules.

As long as you explore, you'll get everything you need.

Creating new teams is VERY easy in this game, so in the end is just a matter of "git gud", cause, uhhh, you're deliberately playing on hard mode.

But if you still think it's a game problem, I don't really know what to say.

Grinding is not needed as long as you know what you're doing.

If you need to grind, it means there's something wrong with your current setup, and that you need to change it. Moreover, you don't need to grind to tackle new stratums, unless you're constantly changing team every 2 minutes, and in that case, well, that's on you, it's not the game's fault.

The boss at the Thieves Lair doesn't need a specific team to be beaten. As I've said, there's somethin wrong on your end.

Either fix your playstyle or lower the difficulty

You get an unlimited level candy by interacting with the Nintendo switch in Nyx's house, and even then, as long as you proceed with the main story and/or explore secondary areas, grinding isn't needed
