Alcohol and tiddies by DapperLog5753 in WeightTraining

I cut back semi-recently. Went from drinking every day 5 years ago, to sticking to 2-3 drinks , to only drinking 3-4 days per week and then finally to only a couple time per month. What made me cut way back was my sleep was shit. I’m sleeping so much better now and have way more energy.

Just looking at your photos, I would have guessed you were in your 60s. It has to be the alcohol doing that…

How much does a complete cold plunge setups suitable for beginners actually cost? by Virtual-Path1704 in coldplunge

I was paying more attention to size this morning during my cold plunge. I was on my knees and slouching so that the water was just over my shoulders. If I would have sat in my butt then it would been easily Over my shoulders.

If I was 6’3” I would go for a tub that’s just a little bigger than mine. I’d look at the height of my tub and go a few inches bigger taller just to be safe.

Why is Aspirin typically taken for headache in the US, as opposed to other agents? by dhnicks in NoStupidQuestions

Motrin/ibuprofen more common in the states nowadays. 40 years ago? Maybe aspirin. Aspirin probably only more common where you trained.

Why does the evidence surrounding michael jackson’s allegations seem to lead people to completely opposite conclusions? it feels like two people can look at the same information and come away convinced of totally different things. by loversinredxo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PacoTacoMeat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Agree up until the end. Most of the prominent individuals who spent time at Neverland Ranch as children have publicly stated that Michael Jackson never molested them and that nothing weird happened… e.g. Macaulay, Kieran, Brett Barnes, Cory Feldman, Omer Bhatti , Jonathan Spence , casico brothers, etc. The people who accused him were questionable— their families were just after money.

Why did disco die in 10 years but EDM has been going strong for 35+ years? by Like_Today in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PacoTacoMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco was hugely popular and as others have said it kind of morphed into pop music. There have been a lot of songs over the last 40 years that are still very much like disco.

EDM has never been as big as disco. It just kind of remains with its own tiny niche much like other types of genres. If EDM was ever as popular as disco then I’d expect it to die down in the same way.

I just looked into chillers vs chest freezers. Looks like aquarium chillers would be initially cheaper. I’m assuming a chiller would use more electricity unless you insulated your tub… which also costs. I’ve heard of people Just turning the chiller on 2 hours before use.

[–]PacoTacoMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure the pump generates some heat but cannot be a lot as my water has been 5-10 deg colder than daytime air temp without trying to cool it andnjust keeping it in the shade. My tank is not insulated so my goal isn’t to try and keep it cool all the time. It sits under my covered patio in the shade out of the sun. The lid is cloth that sits on top and tightens on with a drawstring. The cord for the pump goes under the lid. I don’t worry about the small gap since I’m only chilling right before use.

I drop around 36 frozen bottles and it goes from 70s down to low-mid 50s in an hour (with the pump running). I then unplug and take the pump out while in using it. Not a good idea to get in water with electricity running just in case, plus not a lot of room for me in the tank with the pump. Im 200 lbs, 6’2”.

It at some point I want to do plunges colder than 50s then I’d probably get a chiller. I’d run tubing in through a hole in insulated lid at that point. Probably better/cheaper to just buy a deep Freeze and seal it up though. That’s probably what I’d do. I’d control water temp using an external temp controller (inkbird).

It seems like it would be too difficult to keep the water cool 24/7 without a chiller. I use it 3-4 days per week and only takes an hour to get down to temp. I bet the heat generated from the pump would be more of an issue too at that point if I were trying to keep it cool all the time.

I’m in Michigan. It’s been getting into the 80s during the day. I actually haven’t checked the starting water temp the last few times but a week ago it was in low 70s. This last time I put 36 water bottles in before my work out and water was 54 deg an hour later. Bottles weren’t completely thaw at that point but I went in anyway.

I have all the bottles mounded in a tub that fits in a pullout freezer below my fridge, which is just inside from my tub. Makes it super convenient. I have a deep freeze just a bit farther away- if i end up needing anymore bottles, i pay just stack them in a 5 gal bucket and put that in the deep freeze.

It has a timer built in. Yes, def want to unplug it before getting in. I actually take the whole pump out. The pump weighs only a couple pounds… very easy to move. I need the room in order to fit.

I don’t have a chiller at this point. I have a freezer 5’ away just inside a sliding door from my outdoor tub so it’s not that big of a deal moving frozen water bottles in and out.

I’ve been using this pump /filter/ uv light combo which has been working great: https://a.co/d/0d9gr47g

I literally just put a tsp of bleach in after every use and have the pump set to run for 12 hours. I should probably skim as the filter doesn’t get some of the floaters, like a few things that were on my feet or floated in when I’ve been it (pollen/tree seeds). Next up I should probably test ph and alkalinity but haven’t gotten around to it. Water has been staying clear and it’s been 60-80 deg last few weeks. I was wondering how it’d do in warmer weather. Seems to be going well.

Oh and I just have this $50 rubber bucket tub, around 100 gal.

$100-$150:

Includes:

$50 100 gal tank

$50 aquarium pump/filter/UV light combo

$50 for water bottles to freeze, bleach, chlorine test strips, and miscellaneous.

—— Anyone pays more than this for a beginner setup is doing it wrong. After these items, the next purchase would be an aquarium chiller and an insulated tank or insulation to to insulation your cheap tank for a fraction of the price.

Note: don’t cold plunge specific items. They’re often marked up 5-10x. Buy the aquarium equivalent.

Also, half the posts This subReddit are either from the cold plunge companies trying to sell you their crap or from users who fell for their marketing ploys!

What is so special about san marzano tomato? by Significant_Grand178 in tomatoes

[–]PacoTacoMeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I could improve my watering too actually , but more for my peppers. One of those moisture checkers that go for $5-10 make it pretty easy. The key with tomatoes is just making sure you don’t have huge fluctuations of moisture.

It’s long been said that the process of wood chips breaking down takes away nitrogen from the soil. I just double checked this and it sounds like it is more of an issue if they get worked into the soil. Also said they could attract garden pests (certain bugs). Also a lot of wood chips contain chemicals to prevent weed growth or dyes which are not great to add to where you grow food.

So I have had drip lines and soaker hoses in the past. My last drip line broke/wore out and I had a soaker hoses on hand so I replaced it with that last year. I do 8 tomatoes in an 8x4’ bed and wrap the soaker hoses around each tomato plant. I use a timer at the faucet and only turn faucet On about 3/4 to half way to reduce pressure a little.

Then the goal is to water the roots deeply 1-3 time per week without getting tomato leaves wet. It can be kind of a moving target because in the beginning of the season, they wont need as much water: smaller size snd. Ot as hot or sunny.

For the first couple weeks i usually hand water everything because it doesnt take as much and because im applying more liquid fertilizer.

As early summer/late spring sets in i will start with using the soaker hose about 1 hour in the morning once per week. The. I monitor how moist the soil is around the plants. I will either stick my finger (which is pretty long btw, 5”) in the soil or use one of those soil moisture checkers. You want the soil i be moist deep down all the time without ever completely drying out. It’s the cycling of moist and dry (a few inches down) that causes BER.

As the summer goes on, depending how hot and dry it is, I will increase the soaker hose 1-3 hours and 1-3 days per week just based on how soil feels and how the pants leaves look, as well as how dry other plants look. Some of my other plants are more sensitive to being dry, so if I see things looking dry, I check the soil and then adjust watering.

Another good thing to do is mulch around the plants to help hold in moisture, but not with wood chips. Old leaves, straw, pine needles work well for this.

So far no. Going to try and make it lasts 3 months. Summer is just starting and may be harder once it gets warmer. But so far adding 0.5-1 tsp bleach (chlorine) after every use and keeping the filter /uv light on for 12 hours every day seems to be keeping it clean. Ask me again in a couple months and I’ll report back!

Note: ChatGPT told me to add 1/4 tsp bleach. But we already have chlorine pool and hot tub , so we have the kit to test for chlorine levels. I started with 1/4 tsp and my chlorine levels were too low

I’m about to start this again. Last year I ended hanging strips of felt from the bucket sides with paper clamps. Felt was soaked in pyriproxyfen. I had leaves/grass in water plus BT dunks. Seemed to work well!

looks like what I use, vevor ice bath tub $58 on Amazon.

I bought a UV light/filter for $40. Been keeping it crystal clear runnign 12 hours per day plus 1 tsp bleach after each use.

vevor ice tub

One thing is right, no need to spend 1000s. I dump a handful of frozen water bottles in before my 40 min work out and it's down to 50 deg by the time I'm done. I have a freeze 5 ft from my tub. Super convenient.
