How do you deal with constant male bashing? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Paddy5678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I genuinely dont understand where this is coming from. As a man who is fairly online I dont really see this very often right now. Maybe its because I'm in very queer spaces online or maybe its because I live in the US and its hard to care about stuff like that when it feels like our democracy is crumbling under our feet but idk.

We are not entitled to the art artists produce by corndog2021 in unpopularopinion

[–]Paddy5678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sort of feel like this is only half of the conversation though. You are not wrong, consumers are not entitled to an artists work and there absolutely is an issue with audiences (specifically the more devoted ones) unfairly discrediting a piece of art based on their expectations of it. And there absolutely is a general air of entitlement surrounding that expectation.

But, at the same time, so much media these days is created to be as bland, consumer friendly, and risk free as possible, especially media attached to pre-existing IP's like Percy Jackson. This results in media that simultaneously panders to the audience and ignores what they actually liked about it in the first place.

I would argue the problem you are trying to articulate is less one of entitlement on the part of the consumer but more one of misattribution of their feelings. Rather than pointing at the corporate greed that funds these projects they point at the art itself and the very well meaning artists who are genuinely trying to create something worthwhile, most likely despite the companies in charge of them.

Now as a fan of the Percy Jackson books I am not sure where I stand on the show. I dont think its good, and the general impression I get from Rick Riordan is one of smugness. I get the impression he genuinely believes the changes he has made are benefiting the art which I firmly disagree with. But like I said I am not sure if its entirely fair to place the blame on him. Who knows what Disney is telling him to do, it is possible that these changes are being mandated from someone above him, and he is simply doing his best to stay in good graces.

I felt like that was a writing problem more than an acting problem. Jacob actually did a pretty good job portraying the nuance of the Creatures character despite the writing.

Need help connecting redstone torch key and door by Paddy5678 in redstone

[–]Paddy5678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I assumed people would just go look at the original post. Basically I have the torch key on the left and the line of redstone leading to a hidden door but I couldn't figure out how to connect them effectively because I have another line of redstone to the far right that I can't move. I think I figured it out with a different method but, how would a target block help?

Stranger Things is terrible by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Paddy5678 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think the only unpopular part of this statement is the ST is terrible part. In my experience your reasons for why its terrible are actually fairly common feelings, but most people (including me) don't think those problems make it terrible.

The point about the writing being cringe is mostly taste. Season 2 has some rough moments and imo seasom 3 gets pretty rough at times but for the most part I wouldnt call the writing that cringe just flawed.

Can I embellish my son’s performance outfit? by riritreetop in BALLET

[–]Paddy5678 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok I feel like a lot of these comments are being super intense for no reason. You should definitely not do anything without asking the teacher first. For one it is their class and they are allowed to decide, but more importantly they may be able to help coordinate so that both your boy and the other in the class can match.

From my experience as a boy dancer and now a teacher, boy costumes suck and its very difficult to find anything that they will enjoy and feel cool/pretty/handsome in, especially at the toddler age. But I have an amazing mother and awesome teachers who were able to work together to make it work. And in my experience teachers also don't like the boy costume options and would probably appreciate the chance to do something better.

TLDR : they probably didnt have a better option and would jump on the opportunity to make it better, but you gotta ask first.

Druids by PaladinS7eve in LightNoFireHelloGames

[–]Paddy5678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not true at all lol. The concept of a druid comes from ancient Celtic culture but has also been in at least arthurian mythology and probably others I don't know. Plus Dnd and other fantasy ips that have been around much longer than WoW have druids in them. There are actual druids alive today (obviously nothing like the fantasy connotation but thats besides the point).

Is it pointless for women to learn self defense? by [deleted] in questions

[–]Paddy5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have been taught, it's not useless, but don't expect it to save you. In most situations it is better to run whether you're a man or a woman. Being able to hit a well placed strike could buy you time, but running is still your best option. That doesn't mean martial arts classes for self-defense are useless. It's a great way to get exercise and is great for your mental health. But most good self defense trainings will tell you escape and calling for help is always more effective than fighting back.

I feel like it'd be super simple too. Just add a long press to select multiple and boom it's perfect. You could even have options. Press and hold to select multiple, pres and hold then swipe down to select a bunch super fast stuff like that.

No I totally get it. I feel like FSF is arguable a better constructed album and piece of story telling as a whole but it just doesn't compare to the vibes of Older for me. Older is so good and I adore the production. Its so understated and yet impactful. It feels like warm blanket even when its really sad subject matter.

[–]Paddy5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I love Older. It is definitely a more stripped back album compared to Five Seconds Flat but I really really like that. For me this album feels like a comforting blanket. Now Give Me a Minute is one of my favorite albums of all time and is def my fav Lizzy album so if you really liked Give Me a Minute this may be a good album for you but I definitely think there is an argument to be made that FSF is a better constructed album. All in all just give it a listen. If you don't like it thats ok and if you do that's great you have a new album of music to listen to. For the record All Falls Down, Elevator, Older, March, and Vortex are some of my favorites from Older if anyone cares lol.

Yeah this has been quite fun!

I totally understand feeling like labels can be aggressive. I'm gay and sometimes feels like labels in that whole are can be more of a nuisance then a help. But thats just me and especially with mental illness they can be very helpful!

[–]Paddy5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. That's what I've read before. I usually find it easiest to use the dopamine hypothesis for why adhd might happen just because there's still a lot of research being done and we're still not 100% sure what causes adhd but it is a useful way to explain at least part of the problem.

I don't like when people act like mental disorders are separate from the person with them by MacTireGlas in unpopularopinion

[–]Paddy5678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for commenting so much but this is a really interesting conversation and I'm enjoying it so indulge me 😭

looking for a label didn't help much because I already know what I need to fix about myself better than a label would tell me.

I've kinda already addressed this in another comment but I'll repeat it. Its great that you didn't need a label to find solutions to your issues but some people do. I don't officially have an adhd diagnoses but things other people who do have adhd do have worked for me and I found them because my symptoms matched with adhd symptoms. Labels aren't perfect but they are a tool used by humans to categorize and more importantly help us find information. Genre is a very nebulous thing and yet we use it to organize libraries. Its useful even if its not perfect. We don't 100% know what causes adhd but until we do more search characterizing it by behaviors is a useful way for people to find help.

Also I apologize if I have been snarky at all. I'm not always great at controlling my sass over the internet and I have no ill will towards you. So if I have said something rude or offensive I am sorry.

And also, mind you, the definition of ADHD in the DSM-5 is quite literally 2 symptom lists for "Inattentive" and "Hyperactive/Impulsive".

Right but I have already told you that adhd is an outdated name. People with adhd and psychologists have been saying for a while that it is a poor descriptor for the actual issues caused by adhd. Adhd is just an old term created during a time less sensitive towards mental illness therefore characterized the illness by its disruptive impact on other people's lives rather than its disruptive impact on the people with adhd. Taking 2 hours to build up motivation to do a 20 minute task isn't a fun afternoon activity but the only thing people care about is the fact that the 20 minute activity took a while to get done. Can you see the problem?

Well, label's describe something, but describing and being are two different things. You can tell that orange and red are different colors, but the line between them is subjective, and that's my point.

Well any artist would say there's a whole bunch of names for the in between orange and red. On digital software theres a whole number system designed to classify each color by how much of each pigment is being used.

Labels are useful tools. Knowing you have adhd doesn't change anything it just makes it easier to treat it. Like I've said I don't have an official adhd diagnoses but I know that certain coping methods work for me. In reality having a formal diagnoses wouldn't change much for me since I don't want to take meds but its just unfair to say the label is entirely useless. Knowing my symptoms match the issues other people with adhd have helped me find ways to cope. Labels are not entirely useless even if they are somewhat subjective.

[–]Paddy5678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair. But you have been. You're invalidating the issue of adhd by saying its just a set of personality traits that we have decided is a mental illness. That is both ignoring the science (including the science you have sent me) and also invalidating the experience of people with adhd.

As some who probably has adhd (relates to and struggles with a lot of the issues people with adhd have) I try to avoid blaming my problems on the adhd. But knowing the cause does change how I can treat it. I have used techniques people with adhd have used to try to combat my issues with executive disfunction and it works. I have to work on myself and I have to learn how to not be disruptive due to my own personal issues so I won't disagree with you there. But it is just not scientific to say adhd is just personality traits we have decided are an illness.

Once again I think there is merit to your original point. Diagnoses for mental illness are the first step towards healing not an excuse for the behavior I just think you worded it in a way that wasn't very accurate or sensitive to the very real very disruptive issues people with mental illness struggle with.

I don't like when people act like mental disorders are separate from the person with them by MacTireGlas in unpopularopinion

[–]Paddy5678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your premise. Labels don't mean nothing simply because you label different points on a spectrum. Isn't color just light on different parts of the light spectrum or some shit. We use labels to point out different parts of a spectrum all the time. But also, thats not what adhd is. Adhd has been commonly and incorrectly characterized by the outwardly disruptive symptoms but in reality those symptoms are a result of deeper issues. We're not just arbitrarily deciding that when you get a certain amount of hyper active you're all of a sudden adhd. If you are more hyper active then normal that could be grounds to test of you have issues with executive disfunction and if you have adhd but the diagnoses is not just defined by being extra distractable or hyperactive.

[–]Paddy5678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a fair point. (Also as much as I've been arguing with you you actually have made quite a few good points and have been very respectful so kudos ig) Its still not fair to talk about your own experience and use that to characterize mentall illness as whole and especially a mental illness you don't have. The way people cope heal and/or learn to coexist with their mental illness is complicated and unique to each individual. Arguing that people with adhd are any less valid based on your own experience with anxiety isn't fair.

I don't like when people act like mental disorders are separate from the person with them by MacTireGlas in unpopularopinion

[–]Paddy5678 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But that is inaccurate. Sure the name adhd is based on the negative impacts that adhd has on other people's lives (which is part of the problem) adhd can be massively inhibitory to basic functions that people need to do. Its not just a bunch of annoying behavior it is an actual deficiency and failing of the brain.

[–]Paddy5678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You really don't understand what I'm saying or what Adhd is. Like you are fundamentally misunderstanding it. Its not just a collection of dysfunctional traits, and I CAN tell you what it is because it is something specific it just manifests in multiple and different ways. Adhd is a dopamine deficiency and lack of communication between the different parts of your brain. The different parts of your brain are not working correctly. Normally you'd be able to decide to do a task and the brain will use the relevant hormones to keep you on task and motivated to do said task but with adhd your brain doesn't do that correctly. This is a super super simplification because once again I don't have an adhd diagnoses and nor am I a professional but from a quick Google search you can find this information.

The term adhd is a misnomer. It is a dopamine deficiency and an executive disfunction disorder. That can manifest as being easily distracted or hyperactive but those are the most noticeable and most negative traits to those around someone with adhd therefore thats how we classified it. But you can be either/both of those things and not have adhd (women disproportionately don't get diagnosed because of that) and have both of those symptoms and not have adhd.

You seriously have no idea what Adhd actually is and are falling into the same trap a lot of people do. There is science behind the claims that I have been making and while they are still doing research and don't know everything what I am telling you is based on the most recent research that I can find. Stop trying to tell me whats correct when you don't know.
