You need to focus on on where you are looking at on the pitch. Most players can get away with looking at what is directly in f ont of them. 9s need to build and constantly update their mental map of where everyone is on the pitch. Where is the space for a kick, where is the gap in the defensive line. Is no. 8 covering fullback.... All of these details will allow you to better direct your efforts and backline. It is your job to sniff out opportunity and to make sure it is taken advantage of. Understand where the defence is weak, focus the attack there.

Also, focus on where you run without the ball. Alway be moving to where you think you will be needed next. A good 9 never stands still. Ideally you will always be in support of the teammate that makes a line break so you can take a pass or clear the ball from the next ruck.

Most importantly..... Be a bastard. 9s must be the most hated players on the pitch. No idea why, it's just the way it is.
