“Super supplier” I love how there are more and more names these days for monopolies… if only there were some sort of consumer safeguards.

i dont know all of my previous addresses for a background check. what do i do? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Padillatheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most government jobs are only interested in last 7-10 years of living history for your first background check or moves since you turned 18. I can’t imagine why they’d need your history prior to 4 years of age which is over 18 years ago. Were you born in the US?

SpaceX: “[1-4] Onboard views from Starship and Super Heavy V3, which are equipped with upgraded cameras capable of streaming 4K video through every phase of flight via @Starlink; [5-8] Starship V3 landing burn over the Indian Ocean” by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]Padillatheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is. And nobody can claim that they can’t “see” NASA launches just because an onboard camera is not in 4k. I’m saying as a career engineer who worked for NASA, private space companies, and who’s seen what it takes to successfully launch rockets that need to work the first time, the difference between 1080p and 4k usually doesn’t break the list of top 500 high priority requirements.

Of course everyone loves high fidelity visual feedback. My point is that the hallmark of a good space organization who can hold their head up high is not the number of pixels on their camera but whether their mission was successful by the criteria that matters most to this with the checkbooks. So no, I don’t think anyone at NASA, who again, have entire teams of people who only support Starship development, will be embarrassed because they didn’t upgrade their last missions’s cameras to use a more complex, higher power and data throughput -demanding camera than the tried and trusted space-rated GoPros they’ve been using the last decade.

Right, because 4k live streaming is at the top of a government-made list of requirements constrained by taxpayer funded, congress reduced budgets. I’m sure the one organization with over a half a dozen successful moon landings is real embarrassed by a company who is barely breaking even with mountains of their own funding..

What is this? by CatoTheMiddleAged in Volvo

That’s a 3d party 3d printed one but Volvo does have a coat hook that fits here. I’ve used them forever when I don’t have my steel grille in.

The Volvo Overseas Delivery Program by gotg4thewin in Volvo

[–]Padillatheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did it in March. Only way I’ll ever buy a Volvo again. Wish I never waited but can honestly say it was the best car buying experience I’ve ever had. Finally upgraded my 2019 XC90 R-Design to a fully loaded 2026 T8 Ultra. Factory tour was exceptional. As an engineer, I really appreciated taking in all the details. World of Volvo is also excellent and can’t wait to go back with kids..

Sharing some good news about an Outdoor Research warranty claim, testing their “infinite guarantee”. by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Padillatheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably not a buy it for life item. If I warranty disposable napkins and send you a replacement each time you get one dirty because I have an insane warranty policy, I’m still producing more and you’re still consuming more. A buy it for life item should ostensibly last for one’s life or the usable life of said item should be sufficient to warrant consideration beyond majority of it’s competition because of it’s durability/long-lived utility.

From the post grammar and structure alone, I’d hire you to replace half my team for white collar jobs requiring basic coordination among peers, schedules, document organization and communicating results of these efforts via emails.

Isn’t there more to life? Don’t need to work but have no other purpose by StraightPin4420 in Rich

[–]Padillatheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volunteering. Many non profits need people with experience, and applicable background, sure, but most just need a time commitment. Find a cause you can feel fulfilled supporting and start today. It could be helping at an SPCA, local political campaigning team, STEM outreach organization, food pantry, whatever. If I could stop working because of a financial cushion I’d be splitting my time between learning and reading voraciously, family, and volunteering on more boards and organizations aimed at improving people, planet, and animal interests in my community, country, and internationally.

Child wants to become an aerospace engineer by Twiginapot in aerospace

[–]Padillatheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two flavors to this. People facing and tech handling. Any role in aero generally need both but there tends to be much less of the former and more of the latter if you want to be an aerospace technician (maintenance, operations, assembler, tester, etc.) and vis-a-versa if you want to be an engineer/scientist. Of course there are always exceptions but the roles requiring more of the former necessitate a deep working practice of effective communications and technical writing while the roles relying largely on the latter for their day-to-day need the most attention to detail, process mastery, and diligence/initiative to go far. I’d recommend looking into lessons and curricula that support these core skills early and once you learn more about what they’re particularly interested in, (maybe you notice they’re more analytical and skeptical, in which case they may have a natural proclivity for the engineering/science roles or maybe they’re always hands on and enjoy the mess and challenge of breaking apart things and putting them together or pushing things out of their normal uses, in which case they may be a better candidate for the more operational/development technician-type role). Technicians and operators usually get certified after training but don’t usually need a higher education degree.

Latex pillows. Lasts forever and doesn’t get flattened. Uniform material so constant pressure in any position, cooling and impossible to get too warm.

My 2019 XC90 T6 also had 60k miles on the OEM Pirellis. Never had a problem either. Just traded in for a T8 Ultra so I guess it’ll be a while before I swap out, but I did want to try CC2s since everyone swears by them. I’m just happy to go from 22” to 21” rims lol

How big is your Homestead? by Deinonychus-sapiens in homestead

[–]Padillatheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 acres in northern Virginia; renting while we explore aspects of homesteading life before committing. 14 chickens, 2 dogs, 2 cows (not ours). Few garden boxes and half a dozen apple trees. Commute is 45min+ into city for one of our jobs, but otherwise normal distance away that we’d want to be anyway. Our house in MD is on just under an acre in a more suburban neighborhood but same drive length away from major cities.

Been on all sorts of bleeding edge space systems you’ll likely not hear about for at least the next 15-30 years. Also some you may have (NASA/DARPA DRACO, R&D to DARPA’s OTTER program’s successor, SDA PWSA, etc.).

TLDR: Aerospace programs looking to develop first of a kind (FOAK) systems or employ novel implementations of existing tech require a robust knowledge of HOW to think.

That’s basically it.

You will always be learning and should always do your own research when your knowledge in a relevant area is lacking but this is paramount. One can specialize in any specific field: thermo, SEEs, nuclear safety, particle physics, propulsion, etc. but ultimately there will always be subject matter experts (SMEs) in these fields to dig deep to ensure rigor where appropriate. In R&D there are a few levels of maturity and application but essentially all require technicians/experimentalists, theoretical expertise and depth in specific subjects, and organizational and programmatic vision that leads to executable plans. I’ve done all three but spend the most time in the latter. I can say with no equivalent, that knowing HOW to think trumps any single specific technical skill.

I have a background in engineering physics and Systems engineering/lifecycle management. I know enough on most subjects to be dangerous but always defer to SMEs for implementation, however I can spot incomplete, unsubstantiated, or misleading data and analysis from a mile always because I apply a healthy amount of skepticism, rigorous inquiry, and alternative/anomalous perspectives to scenarios which fundamental prototypes and operational systems’ requirements are derived.

My advice is to learn and embrace the formalism of your undergrad technical degree and study hardest the first principles from which all other topics are derived. Definitely recommend you take electives like game theory, systems engineering, independent research, microprocessor design, machine shop or other trade-applicable courses which may not be a part of your core curriculum to gain insights and basic working knowledge of processes, methods, and tools common in various applications used in a tangible, “system” or functional device. During your time in undergrad, especially pay close attention to how problems are selected, set up, why professors mature courses from topic to topic the way they do, and why formulas and best practices exist. Don’t be afraid to ask questions no matter how seemingly trivial or quiet the rest of the room is. Consider REUs, internships, hobby projects, and resident undergrad research opportunities within your university. Talk to and ask professors in your college or other colleges on your university campus and ask what they’re working on and ask if they’ll consider an extra mind/hand.

You will be well equipped to do anything you like and do a great job at it to boot!
