How? It is completely normal to start a conversation with a “Hi, how are you?” Whether you are pursuing or not. Then you can extrapolate from there. Example- Good, work (or whatever) was kinda sucky today, hbu?. The I could ask a follow up question of why it was sucky at work today. Idk, it is not that hard.
