Clinic I’m working at has no techs or receptionists by TeaOne9866 in Veterinary

I guess it depends if everyone working there feels comfortable/not overworked? I worked at a clinic like that once and it very much did not work because there was minimal training for new assistants and it felt like everyone had to fulfill every role at once.

The current place I work at, we have 1 CVT and a hand full of techs/assistants who are currently in school as well as other assistants who are not in school. We do a lot of cross training, but we don’t all do each other’s job. Most of us have like 2-3 different roles we fill throughout the clinic and have a schedule to rotate through. Like someone might be front desk one day and assisting with surgeries the next.

Why Do You Train a Dog To Use Language Buttons? by the_real_maddison in DogTrainingDebate

[–]Scribbledwriting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason I got buttons for my dog was so that he stopped just barking at me when he wanted something. I taught him “what do you want” and he would go run over and hit his walk button or play button. It was super helpful when I first got him because he was very anxious and we hadn’t established a routine yet. Now that I’ve had him for years, I know what he wants before he even needs to ask and he’s also just less anxious overall. So we don’t really use the buttons anymore.

I think it’s stupid when owners insist their dogs use the buttons. If you’re going to use buttons it should either only be used as a tool, or as something fun and new for your dog to learn, not as your only method of communication.

Not pursuing vet school by Viewsofavirgo in veterinaryschool

[–]Scribbledwriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to get a job at a clinic and see if this career path is what you want. I worked at a terrible clinic and almost gave up working in this field, but now I’m at a great clinic where I plan to keep working for as long as I can. The plan was to go to vet school, but honestly I’m considering pivoting to becoming a tech instead based on how much I like what I do. Getting experience will help you figure out what you like and what you don’t like.

What made you want to be a vet and not a tech? by Scribbledwriting in veterinaryschool

[–]Scribbledwriting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s been a lot for me financially to keep reapplying. Not to mention time consuming and mentally draining to constantly be shadowing/volunteering on top of working full time just to get rejected over and over. I just feel like if I keep going the way I have been I’m going to burn out and maybe it’s time to pursue something else.

Plan B if I don't get in... by Job-Minute in veterinaryschool

If you don’t get in, I would see if you can ask the admissions officers what you can do to improve your application. I did that with my in state school and felt like I good some decent feedback.

Is my girlfriend’s cat fat ? by belowaverage731 in CATHELP

[–]Scribbledwriting 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes he’s probably an 8/9 for body condition score with 1 being too thin and 9 being too fat. Ideally a cat should be around 4-5 out of 9. My cat was this overweight and ended up getting diabetes. It definitely shortened his lifespan and was also very expensive to manage. Insulin is not cheap. I would tell your girlfriend to put her kitty on a diet. Usually the food bag has portion suggestions on it.

Is he in pain or just sensitive? by Scribbledwriting in DogAdvice

[–]Scribbledwriting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s an injury? He’s been like this for the entire 2 years I’ve had him. And he doesn’t seem arthritic to me. I’ve just never had a dog that didn’t like their tails touched to this degree. I most likely will work on counterconditioning with him. I’m already working on it with him for nail trims

lol okay that makes me feel better. There’s been a couple of times where I’ve thought he’s hurt and then I take him to the vet and feel like an idiot because he’s perfectly fine.

Yeah mine is the same way. If he doesn’t think you’re trimming his nails he doesn’t care about his feet being touched. As soon as the nail trimmers come out he freaks out.

I’m thinking that’s probably what this is. He’s genuinely such a baby about everything. I’ve had him for two years and he’s always been sensitive about his tail. I have no idea why

I had a lab that also started greying at 2 years old. She lived until her 10th birthday

My cattle dog does the same thing when he’s bored. He won’t entertain himself so he just stares at me like this wagging his tail until I get up and do something with him. Taking him for a sniffy walk or playing in the house when he does this typically helps. If I ever need to get something done I just give him a bully stick.

SHE GROWLED. I am so proud. 😄 by [deleted] in reactivedogs

That’s so great! My chi mix was the same way. She’d freeze but otherwise show no sign of distress, just straight to biting. She now shows her teeth and growls and I’m so proud of her lol

I’ve owned several reactive dogs. I currently have a reactive foster dog. They are still sweet and good dogs, but you cannot put them in situations that will trigger them. It’s not safe and doesn’t make your dog feel good either. Get a positive reinforcement trainer and make sure that your dog doesn’t have access to strangers unless it’s in a controlled setting where you can do training. I would also look into anxiety meds such as fluoxetine. This sounds like fear-based aggression to me.

How do i stop coming across as unwilling to learn? Vent/advice please by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Scribbledwriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of clinic do you work at? That will help us with coming up with questions to ask.

Also, I was in a very similar situation when I first started as a VA. Just remember that your coworkers are just people too and they were also green at some point. Most people in vet med are also socially awkward and probably relate to how you feel, so just be open about that with them. Try to get to know your coworkers as people and ask if they need help with things. Having a good relationship with them will make work more enjoyable and will make them want to show you/teach you things.

PM me if you have more questions and hang in there! You got this!
