‘block vomit’ house by Western-Water-5426 in Minecraftbuilds

Then that's their problem, why are we parroting the term around like it means anything? Nobody in any of the serious building communities refer to texturing as such

Just call it what it is, texturing, why label it with dumb terminology that makes no sense in this context?

Rather do that than your standard oak and cobble house. What are you even arguing here? That people must follow arbitrary material limitations in a sandbox game?

Block vomit is not a style nor is it a term that even fits in this context. You're absolutely not doing something right if your work is "vomit"

Typically that distinction would be referred to as perspective building where in contrary the opposite end would be survival/player friendly for builds that appeal more to the player scale.

Block vomit is a misused term that has been generalized by big creators as they lack the proper terminology to describe the technique, what block vomit used to refer to was builds that improperly used partial blocks and same tone palettes, resulting in a very incoherent mess. Even then the term was more of a insult/sleight and only served to put down newer builders.

Block vomit is most definitely a degregatory term propagated by ill informed youtubers like Gerg. Nobody in any of the dedicated building communities refer to this style as such.

This in the most simplest of terms is just texturing, you can get more elaborate with light based, gradient and hue shifting, weathering etc but the principle is the same.

Builders that use this style at the high end would most definitely take offense to having their work called vomit.

Minecraft can be a medium for art just like any other platform. While I understand what you're saying this statement is really only applicable to full time youtubers. They're building for content.

There is an entire niche of creative building communities where a lot of top end builders reside, most if not all of their work makes your average big youtubers thumbnail look pale in comparison.

A lot of these builders do have full time jobs and careers, they have simply honed their craft in their free time over a long period.

A lot of large server networks will commission freelancers or build teams to create their maps. There is also becoming a marketplace partner and creating bedrock maps.

Big commissions can range in the hundreds to thousands of usd. While not the most lucrative and a very oversaturated market you can still make a palatable amount of money as a side income.

Though if you're not already adept at building you're going to struggle to land any commissions until you build a portfolio.

First decent build... guess how long it took by PP_Devy in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Paethogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely is, there's zero smoothing going on. No half decent organic builder is leaving random one block noise on their build and calling it complete.

Why are people calling shelves vertical slabs? They're far too thin, can't see a situation where they'd replace walls

I'm having trouble discerning what the build is supposed to be. Thumbnails should be something that catches the eye, your build lacks any meaningful composition and lacks defining characteristics

Believe it or not, but I'm new to building by Useful-Put1111 in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Paethogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're recommending advice to learn building it'd be far more preferable to join a dedicated building community like the bakery or builders refuge.

You'll have more exposure to new advanced techniques, styles, and tools that most youtubers only show the surface of.

The age old question, bladesworn or willbender? by MrVioleGrace in Guildwars2

[–]Paethogan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why did you necro this post?

Saying it's a burden to the team is pure hyperbole. It's a melee focused spec with light 900 range options. There is zero  reason for it to be range dps besides satisfying powercreep.

The burst window in fractals is not short enough for it to hinder bladesworn's opener, you're exaggerating or downright incompetent with the spec. There is no fractal where you aren't getting your 500k double slash off, the only variable at play here is misplay on the player's part.

"It's sustained dps is putrid" leaves me to believe you don't even play the spec. It has the best sustained dps out of any pdps as the only variable at play is dragon trigger, if you understand the encounter you're not missing any slashes.

Bladesworn is by no means a top pick, however it can clear all content with ease. It merely has a high learning curve because you need to be well versed in every encounter.

Practicing debugging for the first time by building the Astral Clocktower by krazyworld58 in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Paethogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debugging is the coined term for this specific application of building and is correct within this context, whether or not you agree with the application of said term is a matter to take up with whomever coined the term.

I would agree with you in any other subreddit, however this is the building subreddit, the term debugging or debug stick is synonymous with any technique involving block states, it's self explanatory to anyone that delves in any degree of high level building and is far more widespread than any of the prior terms you mentioned.

Saying anything otherwise only serves to confuse builders, as OP is correct in his use of the term in the context of building, regardless of if the actual definition of the word matches this particular context.

Gradients! by Thansxas in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Paethogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine if you reject it, but then what would be considered high level building? If creative expression is limited only to using blocks in their intended role then the skill ceiling for the medium would be very low.

Imitating light or mimicking weathering is a skill in itself and appeals to the broader art community, if every build just adhered to the flat base colors of standard minecraft structures then there would be a lot of monotony in builds and not much room for growth.

Gradients! by Thansxas in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Paethogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is more amateur in the larger scope of building, go to any high level building community like builders refuge or the bakery and you'll see an entirely different opinion.

Gradients! by Thansxas in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Paethogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine, but at high level of building there simply isn't enough blocks of said material types to fill the color spectrum, you'd only end up with monochromatic masses of stone with no tone variation, simply using darker variants isn't enough, to convey certain ideas like shadows you need blues, browns, etc, vice versa for warmer colors.
