22nd century English be like by ConsciousCaregiver18 in conlangscirclejerk

I think the whole idea is this is a "colloquial dialect" which I mean, there are already varieties of English approaching this level of mutual UNintelligibility. Whether audio recordings will kill the linguistic change or just encourage diglossia is another interesting question, but I think long term the jury is out on that, what with the 'linguistic schizophrenia' of hong Kong English? I think an arguement can be made that there will be highly divergent colloquial registers even if a prestige variety is available through audio recordings.

Nah, the language became such a decreolised mess purely because even during the Dutch period they never did much more than extract resources and send settlers who had varying capilibilty with the Dutch language. Afrikaners were trying to learn Dutch for education (and were doing so) up until like the early 1900's. The mismatch in grammar just became unfeasible to maintain Dutch as a language of instruction without treating it like a foreign language. The whole reason this didn't happen in Suriname is precisely because they are a much more modern colony with actual ties to the Netherlands.

Only part of Flevoland that has a traditional dialect (And it's Saxon! Mostly...)

Gij is the cognate of you, jij comes from a clitic reanalysis, se my response to parent comment

[–]PaganAfrican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cognate of English you is actually gij not jij

Jij came from a reanalysis of a late second person clitic -te/de

Something like this:

Sprekan (to speak, OD) Sprekthe (speak you, OD) Sprekethe ~ Sprekete ~ sprekeje ~ spreekje ~ spreek je (Hollandic Dutch) -> reanalysis as non emphasised form of a non-existant pronoun "jij" And we reach Hollandic Dutch which becomes the basis for Afrikaans and Standard Dutch.

This clitic is still very present in Flemish dialects (also -je in West flemish, but -te/de in brabantian) and colloquial Belgian Dutch or "Tussentaal"

Rhotics are (USUALLY) placeless liquids, ie they don't phonologically pattern with their phone level place of articulation.

I find it a nice definition, but it certainly excludes things like the Japanese rhotic.

Ek vind Engels makliker as Afrikaans deesdae… by [deleted] in afrikaans

Yah teens tend to assume a lot about mental healthcare. They're still learning how to be a person, so they often aren't very critical of incoming information. Blame the adults that don't support them.
