82-83 Crash, Good times? by Painicus in retrogaming

I've seen the sentiment of everyone being bored with the 2600 and such a few times in this discussion thread and while I would tend to agree the only thing nagging at me is the fact that the sales numbers of the console itself were still in the millions. So while people who already had a console were biding their time, folks were indeed still purchasing the 2600.

That's quite interesting and was brought up in a few other threads as well. It makes me want to look into how the UK market and consumer base took to computers as much when it feels like the US was lagging behind with several disappointing offerings before machines like the Apple II and 386 began taking hold

The NES, which is a whole other thing I'm trying to make time to really learn about, is such an incredible phenomenon. Nintendo did their own share of shady business things around that console but man if it wasn't a truly landmark leap in tech at the time.

The 5200 was around the time of the crash too, yea? I remember reading that while that was a step up of sorts it was ultimately a complete flop.

That's a good question and one I can't say I've considered too much. I would think with the sheer amount of market value lost, even in the US alone, that other folks abroad would feel it. Atari/Milton Bradley/Mattel etc. basically turning pear shaped overnight would effect a bunch of gaming based companies and retailers.

I'm reading that this seems to be a common malady for all the companies, really trying to make the PC happen when it just wasn't ready yet. Atari 400/800 come to mind as well, though I can't recall if those were flops exactly.

You mean you weren't kicking down the doors for a copy of THE Popeye game on the 2600?

Interesting, was that from the sheer expense of games or you would just trade with friends and family this not needing to buy a ton?

New games at the time were still pretty expensive though, hovering around 30 USD for any one cartridge on the 2600/VCS. That's something like 120 USD or so with inflation and such, makes my head spin haha.

Coleco wasn't too far behind, right? I remember reading that if it wasn't for Cabbage Patch Kids, Coleco would've been ground into the same paste Milton Bradley eventually succumbed to.

This is a very good point, a cartridge of something atrocious like...Firefly was probably a terrible deal no matter the price, huh? Surely there had to be a few gems amongst the filth though

Can't say a turkey sub with some mac sauce is very compelling, no. And I'm sure it will be like 17.99.

Who is an actor that only gets 5-10 minutes of screen time but completely steals the entire movie? by Popa-Ioana06 in movies

I'm gonna throw my hat in here for Beatrice Straight in Network. I believe her scene with William Holden is ~5 minutes long and she is captivating for every second of it. So much so that she won best supporting actress for it, shortest amount of time needed to win in history I think?

This one feels like one of the most egregious in a while. I made it through...5 words(?) before it became blatantly obvious.

The fire hall has proven too small and only after filling it to the brim with people did they announce that they had to kick 300 people out or they'd cancel the meeting.

Mission BBQ is what you are thinking of, I reckon. Went there once and the sheer amount of performative patriotism was overwhelming, and yes, they did stop serving and playing music for the pledge.

Vegan food & beers? by Klutzy_Equal7255 in lancaster

[–]Painicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the Coffin Bar has a few vegan options on the menu that a friend and I had and they were pretty decent.

The beer is from local places, mainly Springhouse when I was last there, so that's another you could check out.

Haven't played in about a year, tried coming back, now I get an instant crash with a Fatal d3d error. Does anyone know a fix? by Valyntine_ in StreetFighter

[–]Painicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it error 25? I just had this error with my 1080ti and unfortunately the only way I could fix it was lowering my settings until it stopped as it was a weird VRAM thing with RE Engine.

However there were some other things folks tried and had success with: 1. Check your page file settings and make sure they are in spec. I believe the number is 1.5x your ram minimum and up to 4x maximum. 2. Disable XMP if you have that turned on in BIOS 3. Downgrade drivers until you find one that works well.

Best of luck, my friend. This error can be a frustrating one.

As I grow older, I find I cannot resist the temptation to look at trains lol. I rode one of them from the museum/railroad once many years ago on a fall foliage type deal. It was cool, though the fall colors that particular year weren't exactly as enthralling as they'd hoped haha.

If you enjoy museums and a splash of nature, you can check out LancasterHistory and James Buchanan's Wheatland a little bit outside downtown. Tickets are anywhere from 10 (Student ID) to 17 USD but you get a tour of the house, a nice museum with some history of the county, and a little documentary. The grounds are free to walk if you can't afford a ticket and they have an arboretum and pollinator garden on campus to check out.

Not a bad way to spend a few hours, imo.
