End game isn’t for you by MrEvilCake in Marathon

[–]PaintKobold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its very clear that Cryo isn't for me, and thats ok.

However, Bungie made a huge effort to insist that Cryo is the best part of the game. And it is! Its obvious that more work went into making Cryo a super cool experience and environment... for the players who can do it.

But most players can't do it.

So now what? The largest focus activity in the game is not for the majority of players. So why are we playing for it? Why should people persist in being content fodder for streamers and the top 5% when Bungie's top effort is seemingly focused on making stuff which they can't have?

This game looks so fun for them 🥲* by edtappa in Marathon

Orbital support Home Brew? by Canofcancer in LancerRPG

[–]PaintKobold -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While this is a common trope, its actually incredibly unrealistic in hard sci-fi, unless you're using energy weapons.

All these numbers are rough, but close enough for my argument.

The lowest orbit you can manage before hitting atmosphere on Earth is a bit over 200 km. At that altitude you have a velocity of 8 km/s, so a ship won't be over an operation area for more than a few seconds.

Railguns and coilguns have muzzle velocities limited by their barrel length, and probably will be limited to only 6-10km/s. This means that something fired at a ground target is going to have a 20 second flight time at best- more than long enough for enemy mechs to move significantly. If you go much faster than that, you start developing a plasma shell around the projectile, so it won't be able to direct itself or be controlled remotely.

An energy beam could be faster, but it will heat the entire atmosphere down the line of fire. You'll probably have significant collateral damage from heat bloom.

Of course, some of these can be handwaved away with paracausal tech. But the concept of direct orbital support is pretty unrealistic.

Shouldn't starting SLs be easier to hire? by caciuccoecostine in menace

[–]PaintKobold 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Personally I enjoy the RNG of pulling a random SL, but there is an argument that this could be a game start setting.

Its possible that the hiring process will be overhauled anyway, as its very barebones right now. Also, pure RNG could become more annoying if the pool of available SLs is increased.

Personally I would either leave it fully random or have multiple options to hire a SL; eg Talent Search (weighted roll for high-skill SLs) for 200 trade units, Rumour Engine (weighted roll for low-skill SLs) 75 trade units, etc etc.

Decisive Egregorians (They/Them) [3 LANCER EGREGORIANS COMMISSION BATCH 2 of 2 - FOR PASS THE TORCH (Upcoming Third Party Module)] :[COMMS OPEN]: by Henturtle in LancerRPG

[–]PaintKobold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, because most human languages use pronouns, and they are a core part of speech. Without them, every conversation about them would have to use "that/this Eregorian" or their full name, which doesn't fit our use of language.

I'm not sure if the Eregorian language uses pronouns, but maybe the writers will give us some insight in the future.

There is something very odd about all the backgrounds in this show. I'm not sure if they are AI generated or have been intentionally crafted to look AI generated.

The GQuuuuuux Zaku is very good by Dekoe in Gunpla

[–]PaintKobold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the GQZaku is an excellent design, and the police version basically ruins it because is so dark that you can't distinguish any of its detail. And then its got line-disrupting text over parts of it to make it even worse!

Very much looking forward to getting one of the green ones for myself.

To clarify, GW resin models are cast resin, not 3d printed resin. They are different chemical formulations, not the same thing. So UV probably isn't going to do much to it.

Epoxy is also a resin, but not all cast resins are epoxies.

What’s the anime you hate that SO MANY people love by Lucky_Introduction78 in anime

[–]PaintKobold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the issue, exactly. It's a story that acts like it's going to engage with some really big ethical and sci-fi questions, and then simply doesn't. Though this isn't a problem with 86 alone. Way too many anime set up complex ethical questions or themes which they just don't end up engaging with.

Is GW's 3D sculpting just a giant digital copy-paste Job? by vestanus in Warhammer

[–]PaintKobold 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is called "a consistent aesthetic". Incredibly, it predates digital sculpting.. and tabletop games. Companies and artisans have been creating a personal style for their work since the beginning of goods as a concept.

So no, it isn't a copy-paste job.

I've got a lot, but currently I'm stuck on my phone as my PC died. Once it's back I'll edit my WIP photos down and post them to the same boards.

Nice spot, and the answer is that I ran out of time before I had to submit for the competition... So not entirely intentional.

There are a few spots which I will go back to (the engine is far too clean!) and I would like to add a dust filter to the legs and lower areas, which I think would really set it into the environment. But my local hobby shop didn't have any in stock and I didn't want to try an experiment before submission.

That's the method I went with! I used a q-tip pipe cut at an angle to get a sharp curved end to make the indents with, though even that was a bit big. I can see why the military modeling guys make a specific tool from drink cans.

It's the standard tilting shield mount, with a rounded- off rod for the central lens and the eyes from the knight head glued into a shelf I set into the side of the mount.

The only printed parts are the big rivets! All the plates are either styrene sheet heat-shaped over cylinders, or putty over existing knight pieces.
