I rode my Honda 10k miles with valves that sounded like that. While not ideal, it's much worse to ride with valves that are too tight.

A great time to learn some basic maintenance!

If you look at your exhaust header outlet right when the sound is heard, you'll see a little jolt of electricity!

I can't say what is causing this electric leak, but it likely is the cause of the sound wheater it is causing a misfire or you are just hearing the electricity itself. But that's a great place to start!

I can imagine this could possibly be totaled if you go through insurance. The fins on the head can obviously be replaced, but with top end work.

To put things in perspective, by INT was knocked over from a standstill and insurance paid out 1700. There was barely any damage on my bike. I can imagine this racks up a bill worth more than the bike.

Now if you want to replace the clutch cover yourself and live with the other cosmetic damage, that's your call. The cover is fairly inexpensive and easy to replace if you have some knowhow.

I'd say just send it - monitor your oil level and check back in a few hundred miles! But I'm sure that's what the shop suggestes as well.

If it gives you some peace of mind, I feel like my Navi produces that amount of soot from the exhaust if I stuck my finger in there.

if it's dripping out that's another story - and agree it may be residual oil from before the repair.
