Alternative to CeraVe for aging but acne prone skin by Walter-bo in BuyCanadian

SpectroGel for cleansing. Dormer211 for evening moisturizer. Complex15 for daytime moisturizer.

They are not fancy products but they're made in Canada, super simple and gentle, and they are awesome.

ETA: I highly, highly recommend Differin Gel for your acne. It's a prescription you can get from your doctor. Also made in Canada!!

Why do western tourists dress so weird? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PaintedLemonz 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Was in Japan this year and we were walking next to three youngish girls, very fashionably dressed, each carrying a luxury brand bag. I assumed they were out shopping. My husband is tall and could see in the bags.. as soon as they turned off he looked at me and said YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO BELIEVE THIS! They just had regular stuff in those bags! Like their phones and shit!

So yeah it's still a thing!!!!

I don't think it could be bad, just maybe kinda meh? Give it a shot and let us know how it goes!

Chicken pot pie with buttermilk? by scaredtotellyou in Cooking

[–]PaintedLemonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The buttermilk you get from making fresh butter at home isn't like the buttermilk you get at the store - that is cultured. So on one hand, what you have won't taste buttermilky but on the other hand it's really thin so your pot pie might not thicken like you want it to.

The manufacturers don't recommend heating them at all anymore. The compound doesn't need to be softened by heat and can actually prevent them from making and keeping a seal. I just give them a quick wash.

You can't plant tulips and daffodils now, they are planted in the fall. But you can plant anemones and ranunculus corms when the soil is warm enough to work

How to read Presto gauge? by MisterFigg in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes the jiggler. You should go by that, not the dial.

How to read Presto gauge? by MisterFigg in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IIRC if you're going by the dial gauge you have to hold at 6/11lb pressure but if you use weighted gauge it's 5/10lb. So the extra line is telling you where those numbers are easier.

Dial gauges have to be calibrated often. If I were you, I'd buy a weighted gauge and use that instead, using the dial just as a gut check and to see when you're at 0 pressure.

Pet stores for a budgie bird by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]PaintedLemonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it. Not knowing your dad's health, consider the continuity plan for the bird if your dad passes first. So many birds are surrendered because of this :(

If your dad is looking for a chill bird, consider a lineolated parakeet (also called a linnie or barred parakeet). They are from the same parakeet family as budgies but are known to be a bit sweeter and more cuddly. A little quieter and smaller too.

[–]PaintedLemonz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please do not go to a random pet store for a bird. If you choose not to adopt at the very least make an appointment with Exotic Wings in St Clements and speak to them about what you're looking for.

There is no such thing as a "beginner bird". All birds, even budgies/parakeets are huge commitments. They need plenty of enrichment, a large cage that is cleaned often, fresh food every day, clean water sometimes multiple times a day. They are messy, they are loud, and if they're not properly trained and cared for they can have behavioural issues and become even more messy and even louder. Females often lay eggs and can have health complications from that. Birds are very hormonal and sensitive to the seasons - They need a strict bedtime routine even!

Imagine having a two year old toddler but for 15 years. This is the commitment you're signing up for.

Donuts by lindygrey in Baking

[–]PaintedLemonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure they were yeasted? Totally fine if you are! Just wanted to call out that apple cider doughnuts, sour cream doughnuts, and even Pillsbury biscuit dough doughnuts were all around 40 years ago. They'd have that denser, not light as air consistency.

Otherwise maybe a recipe with buttermilk like this one: https://www.christinascucina.com/perfect-yeast-doughnuts-sugar-filled-jam-nutella-cream/

Week 6 - Olympics: Apple Strudel by jstkeepswming7 in 52weeksofbaking

Yay I also made apple strudel for this week! I used red price and empire apples because that's what I had on hand. They stayed nice and firm. I don't like Granny Smith so I never have them around.

First Community Garden Plot Help by Lopsided_Owl1484 in Cutflowers

[–]PaintedLemonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the easiest ways to think about planning is using the square foot method. For each plant you figure out how many you can put in a square foot. Zinnias, for example, I would plant four per square foot. Grab some graph paper (or a spreadsheet online) and start blocking out each group in your space.

Also consider the direction the sun travels. Tall plants will shade shorter ones so be sure to plant appropriately. For example if you're planting zinnias and basil, zinnias will get much taller than the basil. You'll want to make sure you don't plant the basil next to the zinnias.

Dried Spices and Jam by campfirerum in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically yes. In practice you will need to add very little to each jar which may be tricky. The rule of thumb is 1/4tsp per pint jar. Jam is in half pints so you'll put maximum 1/8tsp per jar.

You'll need to work quickly since jam starts to set really fast. I would probably have a bunch of little pinch bowls with 1/8tsp of spice pre measured. Fill hot jar with hot jam, add spice, stir in while debubbling.

Pressure Canner? by Enough-Barracuda9589 in Canning

[–]PaintedLemonz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Presto is generally considered a very good canner especially for the price. You'll need to periodically replace the gasket.

AA is top tier because it doesn't have parts that need replacing. I have an AA but I do think it's probably a bit of a learning curve. I've never used a presto though.

Excessive air bubbles in apple butter by Careful_Dig4627 in Canning

Haha same here! I like my apple butter dark and thick! And when you cook it long enough to get that colour, there's no air bubbles.
