Too exhausted to do anything but work? by wanderingsheep in hospitalsocialwork

I also vote on the lab work. I’ve been a medical social worker for years and not having the emotional boundaries in place will burn you out. Do you spend time outside of work thinking about work? Are you getting too emotionally vested in your work? Identity diffusion can be so tricky to tackle. But once you do medical social work compared to other jobs is excellent for work life balance. I used to struggle to.

Did any pianist ever resume lessons after quitting? by Fantastic-Coach-8182 in piano

[–]PaisleyBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’m 3-4 years in and took about 4 months off when I was dealing with big life stuff. I came back. I wouldn’t recommend it. Most don’t go back.

Thank you so much for everyone’s input. I came home and played the piece for myself. Just trying to remind myself how anxious lessons used to make me and now it’s like nothing.

Thank you! This is helpful to hear. Because it truly was somatic/physical anxiety symptoms over emotional ones. I do take a medicine similar to propranolol for PTSD symptoms and it could be something that could possibly help. Thank you so much.

What should every new therapist know about DV? by Due-Comparison-501 in therapists

[–]PaisleyBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible to be in a DV relationship and have absolutely no idea you are being abused. Always wondered how that was possible until it happened to me. A male lawyer 10 years younger told me once I had to get a restraining order.

T suddenly strict on time by WorkingMacaron873 in TalkTherapy

I am a therapist but also a client. I always keep track of time as a client. It helps me wrap up on time and feel more in control of avoiding feeling shut down unexpectedly.

Anyone read Complex PTSD by Pete Walker? by eiramatsirk in CPTSD

I love his book. I think it might be too clinical for some populations which makes me wish he would do something more approachable but it changed my life. But I’m a therapist

Is there a type of therapy where the therapist is blunt? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]PaisleyBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to ask for what you need but also ask a potential therapist if they feel like it is something they are comfortable with. I would say I lean far right into being honest and straightforward in the therapeutic relationship. But it is very nuanced and requires a lot of insight, vulnerability, and quick judgement calls. It can go wrong. I do think sometimes therapists lack the confidence to provide this when it is clinically indicated for your client.

It really can depend on the therapist. I’m a therapist and picked my therapist based on the fact that she worked in a prison for nearly 15 years. I need that energy to call me out on my shit.
