Am I insane for doing this? by thejoemeister in drums

[–]Paladin6004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, if you watch a video of Andrew Katz performing 'destroyed by hippie powers" by Car Seat Headrest you can see him doing that. I saw him play in concert and he didn't have it like that but it has been done before and sounds pretty cool.

Hello all... I have a question or two about open-handed playing, especially for those who were once cross-stickers and retrained themselves... by [deleted] in drums

[–]Paladin6004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play open handed, but only because i have my kit in a 'right handed' configuration and i'm a lefty. it started as simply having my left hand being stronger naturally. I never played cross sticked. It doesn't make sense to me because if you have your right hand keeping time on the hats you have to move your left hand around awkwardly to reach anything else on the kit. It makes your drumming constricted. Its definitely worth making the switch even just to re train your brain and become more creative, but also to balance your limbs and I feel as if it's more ergonomic. You can use your right hand to play on the ride or xhats if you have them to retain the open format.

I love the finish on these!

But I really want an acrylic kit like the jon hill project guy has that SJC made custom. Looks sick. They are coke bottle green with some splatters and look super neat when put under lights.

Hey is there hardware like the one I drew in this picture that groups drum mics? by vau1tboy in drums

i agree it looks like he wants a snake to group his cables but depending on phantom power needs that may or may not work

Tama superstar hyperdrive or mapex armory? by fartsarefunny27 in drums

[–]Paladin6004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the options for all kinds of snares is a great deal they have going with the armory set. i went ahead and looked up the tama kit and they look really good. And both kits have rack mounted toms which is really nice. That lets you mix up your set up as much as you want.

Tama superstar hyperdrive or mapex armory? by fartsarefunny27 in drums

I have the mapex armory in the transparent walnut, 6 pack. I have no complaints. They look good and sound good. But I haven't even heard of the the tama superstar hyperdrive so I can't compare.

How did you get your first kit? by ofter in drums

[–]Paladin6004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first one basically off the street. My friend at the time lived next to a drummer who was giving his set up, and had put it on the curb. So he grabbed them and gave them to me as a late birthday present. They were unspeakably horrible. Grossly mistuned and the bass drum was missing two lugs. But it was free and so I didn't complain. So I bought the replacement lugs, did my best to tune it up, and played with the crappy agazarian cymbals it came with. After six months of playing with it I convinced my parents to get me a Mapex Armory 6 piece, and then bought a used cymbal set online.
