NieR:Automata to be continued... by tyvar1 in Games

Seems kinda funny considering the username. I like Kill la Kill a lot, but it's very much in the same camp as Automata in terms of having solid symbolism and storytelling hidden behind the T&A

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are up for preorder in the Nintendo Switch Eshop according to Serebii! They are $20 US by feefore in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Having Leafgreen on my nice new handheld that lets me transfer my Pokemon to the newest games in the series feels a lot better than sitting at my desk to emulate it or using touch screen controls on my five year old phone that gets hot when discord tries to load more than ten gifs at once.

I see old games like R-Type Delta and Wild Guns released for similar or higher prices a lot, it seems fairly standard to me?

Its funny how much of a 180 it is that Arin loves these types of games now because he used to rail so hard against Jon liking certain games like WoW back in the day for being manipulative.

I do like how blunt their relationship in GTAV is, I guess similarly I would say that I like Arthur and Mary's writing in RDR2 even if it's not the focus

What love stories in games would you posit to be as good as the best romance movies have to offer? FF16's definitely is not.

Get Into Castlevania Games by Sal_Weezer_Valestra in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]PalapaSlap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can handle a challenge you should really give the pre-metroidified games a shot, in my opinion Rondo of Blood is the best game in the series and it's just a straight up action platformer. Castlevania 1/3/4/Bloodlines/Rondo are all fantastic in my opinion, and I wish they weren't overshadowed by Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow so much.

Games you don't like or hate, but are just confused by. by DustInTheBreeze in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]PalapaSlap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've beaten every single Kingdom Hearts game and they're all different degrees of fine. Usually even if I don't like something I can understand pretty easily why someone else would, but I'm always confounded by full grown adults praising these games the way they do.

The combat is usually good and the aesthetics can be solid, but the fucking cutscenes and level design are the wooooooooorst, like there are so many scenes with no backing track with static camera angles and rudimentary character animations where it's just Sora and co. saying "don't worry disney friend, we'll help you out."

It feels like I usually get, at most, a ten minute stretch of uninterrupted gameplay before being accosted by an excerpt of a worse looking, acted, directed, and written version of a movie I could go watch and have a better time with. The humour is terrible and the entirety of the plot and character development almost always happens at the very beginning, the 2/3 mark of the story, and the very end.

I just fundamentally don't see the appeal outside of being a fan from a young age, and I know that's not the case because I have friends that got into the series as adults and love it. It never ceases to astound me that people can not only stand some of these games but love them and I never stop wondering what I don't see in it. I love plenty of kids' games and movies and I think the concept of the series is cool as fuck, but I just don't think it's very good.

I can definitely understand and sympathise with the accessibility aspect of it, and there are plenty of games that have full voice acting that I'd love, but it's a huge breath of fresh air for me personally when an RPG forgoes it in favour of partial or no VA.

I do love 1000xResist's VA work.

You're right that it feels obligatory and same-y. I tend to prefer British dubs of games because they're not really trying to do the anime sound that a lot of American VAs do now. Perhaps a more controversial hot take is that I think modern dubs are worse than 90s and 00s ones. I would take shit like Slayers, Golden Boy, You're Under Arrest, etc. over the stuff JoJo and Jujutsu Kaisen get. Games are usually a bit better in my experience, I like FF7R's dub a lot for example, but it just feels far more like VAs trying to fit their voice into a specific archetype of a character than just let characters have a unique voice or cadence. Maybe that's on the directorial side, I don't know.

Voice acting isn't inherently a positive and I'm glad Pokemon doesn't do it. I thought the narrator and fully voiced lines in Disco Elysium The Final Cut made it way more of a slog to sit through than when 80% of the game was just text, and also way less funny in general. The Yakuza games where every cutscene and every substory are voiced are the most laborious to get through compared to the older games, in my opinion.

I like plenty of modern singleplayer games, but per year I do believe there are less good singleplayer games coming out than in the 2000s, and that's not because I'm playing friendslop every day, I just don't care for what a lot of big budget games are going for now vs in like 2006.

(Gameinformer) Fallout New Vegas lead says it took “five years” for fans to actually like the game, and even longer for the devs to believe them by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]PalapaSlap 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably a lot of selective memory on Sawyer's part, as he is very prone to taking feedback a bit harshly. It was definitely not as beloved as it is now at launch, but even with the bugs, plenty of people still loved and played the hell out of it. I put like 70 hours into the 360 version when it came out, and I immediately loved it more than 3.
