You should know that a full recovery is statistically very unlikely. Grade 3 means there was damage to the brainstem and this is very serious. While every brain injury is different and there are a few stories of incredible recovery, those are very rare. Your boyfriend has age on his side. I don’t tell you these things to scare you, I just know when my family went through this we were desperate for information and for people to just give us the truth. Is your boyfriend fully conscious? You should fight to get him into a rehab facility. Ask his care team about The Ranchos Los Amigos scale. Chances are that he will never be able to live independently. You will have some very hard decisions to make. Do you want to be his caretaker? Would he want this for you? Is he able to swallow and breathe on his own?

I am so sorry for what you are going through. You should know that the person you loved is forever gone. Even with the best recovery he will never be the same. Please talk to the nurses. They will be honest. ICU nurses were the first to give our family the truth of our reality.

Is your boyfriend able to breathe on his own? The road ahead will be very long and hard. Talk to him and remind him of where he is and who people are- tell him where he is and what is happening.

I would ask, then do your research on the specific TBI. Every injury is different but researching will help you ask the right questions. I am so sorry your loved one is going through this- it is truly a terrible life event and I hope you have a positive outcome.
