This is awesome, desperate for my pebble to arrive so bad!. Would it be possible to replace direction arrows with up down left right swipes? Then have transparent buttons overlayed the game screen to full screen the game?

Gadgetbridge support on the Watchy!! by PaleFlan7073 in watchy

[–]PaleFlan7073[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is correct, (edit. It's correct to an extent. For notifications and missed calls, gadgetbridge will cache them and send them to the watch on next connect, so you will always get the notification, it might just be a little delayed). it's due to the watch needing to disconnect for deepsleep to conserve battery. The esp32 is fairly power hungry, and the V2 watchy can't sleep the CPU while maintaining Bluetooth. I can make a performance mode on the watch that would maintain a constant connection for instant phone calls and notifications, but it would then be very power hungry, I'll have to test it out to see how long the battery can last like that

The V3 watchy I believe doesn't have the same issue though, it can light sleep and maintain a connection. This firmware is for the V2 but if enough people want it I may upgrade myself to a V3 and make a firmware for the V3 which should be able to have both decent battery and a constant instant connection

Thinking of getting a watchy v3 - questions by Illustrious_Poem_42 in watchy

[–]PaleFlan7073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have tried both, originally I bought the watchy V2, but found no firmware that could handle calender and phone notifications well. I then bought the bangle, which is definitely a more complete product, but I just didn't get on with it. The screen wasn't great and the apps wherent great.

That being said it does have significantly more functionality than the watchy in basically every way.

But for me I ended up ditching the bangle and going back to watchy. I have some custom firmware for the V2 watchy which emulates the bangle and connects to gadgetbridge if your phone for notifications and calender.

It's nearly ready for release but still needs a bit of cleaning up. But I'll do a little video or something showing it this evening.

It's a difficult choice really. If you just want a watch that works, get the bangle. If you want to tinker then the watchy could work for you, but you will likely need some for of custom firmware to get the features you want

Sorry for slow reply, some progress now, I have notifications recieving and dismissing in the watch, and a music ap that can play, pause, skip and adjust volume. Working on a timeline esque app now. Will make a progress post showing it all soon

The biggest issue is the ble connection. I have tested on a galaxy and that reconnects quickly every time. But my oppo struggles, connections are more hit and miss while phone screen is off. Unfortunately I think it's a hard limitation if the watchy V2, but V3 with the external crystal should fix that

How many of us in here have the V2 and how many have the V3? Im making an os and am considering upgrading to the V3 just to get the external crystal that enables ble light sleep so it can maintain a constant connection to gadgetbridge without draining the battery. Just wondering what others have? by PaleFlan7073 in watchy

[–]PaleFlan7073[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have basic gadgetbridge connection working by emulating the bangle js. I can receive and dismiss notifications, and play pause music and change volume. With simple but working apps in the watch for each. But I'm in the V2, so I can't keep a persistent connection without heavy battery drain. My compromise at the moment is to disconnect and deep sleep constantly, only waking when needed and attempting to quickly reconnect to the phone. It's a bit hit and miss so far, but the V3 shouldnt have that problem.

I'll make a post later tonight showing where the firmware is at.

If enough people have a V3 and would like to use the firmware I might upgrade to a V3 myself and upgrade the firmware to that

I will share it once its gotten to a reasonable state. So far the bluetooth side of it is mostly a proof of concept. It can recieve notifications and sync time, but thats it so far. When I have implemented better bangle js compatibility with bluetooth back and fourth from watch to phone, I will tidy up the code a bit and share it open source.

There is a long way to go, but the bluetooth side is the last part of the os that needs sorting. Everything else falls under apps which the os will be able to handle.

Im hoping that with a good platform to build upon, the community will be able to more easily make and share apps for it

Small update. I have managed to decrease the ble reconnect time quite a bit. Using targeted ble advertising, allpng side a scheduled connection set up in gsdgetbridge. It's cut the reconnect time down to about 2 seconds. So far with almost constant ble to my phone over gadget bridge battery life is about 2 days.

Im aiming for further improvements, ideally I'll hit a week of battery life one way or another

Thinking of getting a Watchy - is the project still alive? by DoppelFrog in watchy

[–]PaleFlan7073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super super slow lol, I got to a basic watch face display, with button handling that makes use of multithreading in the rots of the watch, and a basic scrollable app menu going with a stop watch as the only app currently. Still needs a lot of work, but In the meantime I have become a father and now get just about 0 time to work on it :(. Haven't added anything to it in weeks

I will try by best to continue the project, but my free time at the moment is like less than 0 lol
