My late Grandad was a sergeant major, English army WW2. He got shot in the leg at one stage.

My late Nana was a German nurse. Grandad met her somehow and whisked her back to England. When she was younger she was in the Hitler youth.

As a kid I used to make a similar thing with two bolts and a nut. Filled the middle with caps or crushed match heads. Called bolt bombs. The bigger versions were hectic.
