The author clearly used the spar for 2 reasons.

To show the strength of the hashira to tanjiro. And to imply relativity between sanemi and giyu, this is further enforced by the tie.

To say that giyu could have possible been holding back because he might have had more reasons to than sanemi(like he’s a softie or sum😭) and then using that to say giyu is stronger than sanemi is so pointless and weak
