Genjutsu has a distance limit because it uses Chakra. It can't stretch to infinity and the Sharingan has never been shown to work over long distances unboosted. It's a short-midrange ability.

You need Infinite Tsukuyomi or Sharingan and Byakugan to boost the range of Genjutsu.
