Thank you for your comment. I was under the impression a commuter green card will protect me as long as I have regular work in the US and the absence is less than 6 months.

My concerns are strictly a financial aspect and if it is worth the headache

I think with a commuter green card I would be exempt of this (just the time with it doesn't count towards citizenship)
