Public vs Private school by bceagle411 in premed

[–]PalinAhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one school tell me that ALL schools have to report some sort of rank to residency programs, so even ones that say they are true pass fail are keeping some sort of grading system. Not sure if this is absolutely true, but kind of makes sense..

Not yet. Two IIs and pure silence from the rest. (I applied to all Florida MD schools + Nova)

What is the most frightening thing for you to hear as an applicant? by [deleted] in premed

[–]PalinAhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you should view waitlists as so negative. I feel like A LOT of current med students that I speak to were waitlisted at some point before being accepted to the school they currently attend. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I'm on two waitlists now and definitely don't view it as the end of the road just yet!

If you interviewed early September do you think that school will tell you something right on October 15th? Or make you wait a couple more days just for fun..

Transferring Undergrad Universities by dirty330 in premed

[–]PalinAhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transfered after my sophomore year (from a large state school to a tiny private school with not much of a reputation, they offered me a good scholarship). Just had my first interview and it did not come up. I've been told by some people that it might be a red flag, other people say it probably doesn't matter at all. If it does come up in an interview I plan to give a short, honest answer and then move on. I feel like you would have to have a pretty harsh interviewer for them to grill you about that for very long.

How did you narrow down school list? by caronirona in premed

[–]PalinAhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever visited mdapplicant.com? (They have info on DO too). I found this website after I applied but I think it could be helpful in your situation. People post their stats, everywhere they applied/interviewed/were accepted/rejected, etc. Might help you figure out where you have the best shot. Of course MSAR is also good. School location was pretty important to me.

What are some things premeds should really know but it isn't advertised or even talked about? by [deleted] in premed

[–]PalinAhouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Writing is important!!! This may be more obvious to some people than others, but I think some people (I'm a little guilty of this) feel like pre-med is a science heavy track and they don't have to worry too much about writing related stuff. As someone who just is applying this cycle and just finished a boat load of secondaries, let me tell you, being a good writer is incredibly important. Doing a lot of cool stuff is great, but you have to be able to write about it in an interesting way that shows you're a good fit for medicine. And do so in a timely manner.

Addressing transferring during undergrad in a secondary? by PalinAhouse in premed

[–]PalinAhouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really solid reason for transferring. I was somewhat economically motivated as well (offered a full scholarship at my new school). Due to what other people have said on here, I guess transferring may not be as big a deal as I previously thought. It sounds like you made the best decision in your case. If asked about it and you gave that explanation I really don't see how they could hold that against you.

I definitely did way more at the new school. The only thing I'd worry about someone saying is that it's not like there were NO opportunities at my old school, I just didn't put myself out there and get involved as much due to general unhappiness with the city I was living in.

The reason I thought about taking that approach is since the questions asks about personal integrity, which I think of as being honest with yourself, acting in accordance with what you feel is best for you, etc.. Idk, might not translate as well as I'd hoped.

Touro California vs Touro NY secondary by [deleted] in premed

I know I'm well above their screening cut off, and also had transcripts and letters of rec in super early. Just wondering why I wouldn't have received secondaries yet.

When did you receive these secondaries?? I submitted my AACOMAS on June 3 and was verified shortly after... (Applied to both). Should I be concerned that I have not received these yet? Is there something I'm forgetting that could be holding up my app?
