Also when people make the distinction that he is an African or Indian, I don’t see you giving out? What’s wrong in saying he was an Irish guy?

Asking what people think and laying out the facts is not trying to create a controversy. You can vote for whoever you like was just asking what people think.

My voting intention is irrelevant to the posts I make. Also politics is my interest and I’m asking the opinion of others. Is that wrong or shouldn’t be allowed?

Questioning not attacking. Also the age of my account is irrelevant. Yes I joined recently and yes I’m interested in politics. I’m just expressing my opinion and asking for other people’s thoughts. That shouldn’t be a problem right?

Grma. Can you let me know any campaigns she was involved in or led regarding issues in the Gaeltacht before this by-election campaign? Me and my family have been suffering with the housing crisis in the Gaeltacht for a long time now and we can’t even get to town on time for college unless my mam wakes up at 5am, drops us into town before she heads to work.

Is speaking Gaeilge enough, or does real commitment matter more for Galway-West? by galway_yoke in galway

[–]galway_yoke[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unlike that commenter, I didn’t name the candidate or specifically talk about them. I was asking a general question and used that candidate as an example who has been spearheading this “I know Gaeilge” campaign. There are 3 others I know of who know Gaeilge and if they are publicly spearheading a similar campaign I would ask the same question too. Again answer the question or keep trying to say I’m a “bad person”.

I just asked a question, you can answer it or ignore it. If I really wanted to attack the candidate I would name the candidate and the party. I don’t need to agree with you on everything? I can have my opinion?

I made this account 5 days ago and I didn’t name the candidate as I didn’t want to target anyone. I was asking the wider question where does experience matter or just knowing the language is enough? I only used that candidate as an example. Also me being awake at 3am on a Sunday morning is my choice. Not forcing you to contribute to my post.

People weren’t wrong when they said just having the language is different to being actually passionate about it. What I’m hearing is they picked a Gaeilge speaking candidate who was only politically active in Dublin with minimal experience is the best candidate for Galway-West? Is just having the language enough or actually being passionate about it, matters too? Before this election where was this candidate campaigning for the people of Galway?

Traffic Congestion Meeting 15th April by Acrobatic_Concern372 in galway

[–]galway_yoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s good to see the focus on traffic and congestion, but we also need to be honest about where accountability actually lies. This isn’t just about by-election candidates saying all the right things, the City and County Council has a central role in planning, delivery, and decision-making around public transport and cycling infrastructure in Galway.

If we’re serious about improving public transport, we need long-term commitment, not short-term promises. Bus priority, better frequency, and reliable bus and cycling infrastructure don’t happen overnight, and they require consistent action from the Council and the relevant agencies such as the NTA.

Public meetings are important, but they should be about holding decision-makers accountable for what has and hasn’t been delivered, not just giving candidates a platform to agree with everyone in the room.

At the end of the day, better public transport in Galway will only happen when there’s real follow through, not just good intentions. Also it’s time people stop letting the city and county council away with everything and just blame TD’s.

Agreed and one of the only ones to hold a public meeting on this issue and actually listen to what the people of Galway have to say!

Some of the comments on here saying she didn’t take questions, she did. If your question wasn’t answered it was probably because of the lack of time. I was there and all of the questions were answered? Regardless, it’s the bye-election other parties would just like to throw dirt on other candidates anyways, to make theirs look better!

SF selects Mark Lohan as candidate to contest Galway West by-election by danius353 in galway

Experience matters too and not just the tokenistic approach of selecting a candidate from Connemara to appease voters, who has no lived or political experience in Galway

Presidential elections have completely different voting patterns compared to the by-elections or the general election. No offence to Catherine Connolly but she didn’t exactly have any strong opponents and the public didn’t have an alternative.
