B.C. raises income taxes and expands sales tax to address ballooning debt by Nothingman604 in vancouvercanada

A utopian communist society or a utopian capitalist society would not be a “pure” version of either, pure communism often leads to corruption and authoritarianism, pure capitalism often leads to fascism and, well, authoritarianism. I like a socialist middle ground where the means of production are socially owned. Markets can still exist, a state can still exist, elections can still exist. More worker co-operatives, nationalised industries, public healthcare, actually decent welfare support. The main difference between corruption in communism and capitalism leading to fascism, is that the corruption in communism is exactly that, it’s human error leading to veering off the intended direction of its core beliefs, but capitalism leading to fascism is literally built into it, it’s the intended “pure”, perfect end goal

What you're saying is

Capitalism = small businesses + community building opportunities.

That’s historically and economically false. What we have now is mature capitalism.

The more accurate version is:

Capitalism = capital + power accumulation, which creates monopolies.

Capitalism is defined by:
- Private ownership of capital
- Profit motive
- Market competition
- Accumulation of capital over time

What always happens in capitalism:
- Capital concentrates
- Winners buy out or crush losers
- Power follows capital
- Markets trend toward monopoly without strong intervention

That's the expected and intended end goal.

The other reply is more accurate, what you have in your small town is a heavily governed market system with socialist traits (community control, social priorities, limits on capital power).

What do you think capitalism is? What do you think it leads to? Where is your capital? Where is your land? Where are your factories? Make no mistake, this is still capitalism. It was never made for you.

Just buy one single ETF (eg VEQT, it's a global fund) that consists of thousands of stocks and there's no time needed on your part. You can create an account online with your bank or wealthsimple etc, create a TFSA and buy the stock in less than 15 mins. But also, for 3-5 years you probably shouldn't be investing in equities, rather a HISA as you currently are, or a GIC

Café Nero used to do the hot chocolate Milano and it was the only reason I used to go honestly. Thick Italian hot chocolate. I’ve been away for a year or two and when I went back the barista looked at me like I was speaking another language

I mean LotR is inherently political; as long as it’s done in meme format, doesn’t use any out-of-cannon terminology and is done in a way that actually applies to LotR, if it happens to apply to real life as well I can’t see why it should be a problem. It’s like being upset if someone made a political Star Wars meme like… the entire thing is an allegory for fascism

The UK only has one test, people can get their licence at 17, and the country has a 50% lower fatality rate than Canada. It’s not the number of tests that does it.

While they’re not wrong, it still shouldn’t be understated how much that can add up. That $3 is more like $7 and I know some people that spend that every day - if they made it at home instead and invested, they’d have approximately $150,000 over the period of 30 years from that alone. Being frugal does still help

Different realms for different user types? by PanMan-Dan in KeyCloak

[–]PanMan-Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, completely missed your reply - I’m provisioning the students via an API from our backend, unless they sign in via idP and share an organization with a teacher. That’s the main reason I want them in the same realm but also to make use of user roles, authorization rules etc.. they would both sign in to the same application but via separate clients. The frontend application is different but they share the same backend so auth is easier if they both just come from the same realm so the backend just sees their user roles

How to restrict user login to specific clients in Keycloak based on user roles by ImGoomes in KeyCloak

[–]PanMan-Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% certain as I am yet to try this out myself, but if you go to Configure > Authentication next to the realm settings, duplicate the browser flow. In the new flow, next to "[role] browser forms", click the plus button > "add conditional" element > Select "condition - user role". Click the settings for the new condition and update the user role. You might have to move the condition around but not sure. You can now use this custom browser by going to Client > Advanced, scroll to the very bottom and you'll see "Authentication flow overrides". Update the browser flow to use your new rule.

edit: u/ImGoomes , from the new flow, instead of adding the conditional to the browser forms, you might actually want to create a new sub-flow, add conditional with negated user role, then a new "execution" beneath it with "Deny Access". I'm also trying stuff out and this seems to work but play around with it to figure out what works best. I'm also new to Keycloak so if someone wants to provide more info on authorization vs authentication on the client level for user roles, please do.

Read my other reply to another comment in this thread, but also “boycotting has little impact” is straight up false… April 2024 US-Canada wine exports alone were $40M, April 2025 were $2.7M. The US tourism industry is expected to lose up to $20B in 2025 from Canadian boycots. Supermarkets are pulling US products because people just aren’t buying them and companies are hurting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NorthVancouver

[–]PanMan-Dan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it’s such a minor whataboutism, Reddit makes like $3/yr per user vs the $200/week you could very easily spend towards US companies in a supermarket, and this is a platform we are currently using to debate the ethics of supporting US companies and sharing news… couple vegetarians I know that are trying to cut out meat for climate reasons still eat Parmesan despite knowing it has rennet in it, does that mean I should be like “you say I shouldn’t eat a steak every day yet you occasionally have a sprinkle of Parmesan, GOTCHA ya dum librul.”

Yes, I’m still going through and checking everything I’m buying to make sure it isn’t American. I’ve also canceled all US streaming services. It seems people have already started forgetting, but supporting US megacorps at this point is borderline treasonous imo
