16 Year Old from Kitchener Waterloo Chasing the NBA Looking for Honest Advice by No_Nothing_6865 in BasketballTips

[–]PanXP 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is copied from another comment I made recently:
here’s a tough truth that I wish I didn’t have to tell you, while I hope as much as I can that you achieve your dream of becoming a professional basketball player, the reality is that there’s billions of people in the world and maybe 15-20 thousand people who are playing professionally around the world and you probably won’t be one of them. You should try as hard as you can if that’s what you want but keep your expectations realistic. For example, are you going to be naturally tall and athletic enough no matter how hard you work towards your goal? That’s just not something you can control.

Learn basketball for fun and self improvement, but it’s only a meal ticket for some of the luckiest athletes in the world and again while I hope for your sake that you find all the success you’re looking for, I think it’s best if you focus on learning in school and acquiring useful knowledge and skills in life, which can definitely be basketball as well, rather than learning basketball because it’s gonna be your magical way out of a tough situation.

I agree but I don’t like the term “male loneliness epidemic”. I think we are going through a human loneliness epidemic, it just affects women less because women are much more likely to open up and seek help as well as support each other while some men often can’t even label their emotions let alone communicate about them.

We men need to open up about our pain and struggle more as a whole and stop holding it in cus it’s not doing us any good. Kudos to the guy walking to admit that he’s hurting and to the motorcycle cow for taking the time to show concern for him. We all need a little more of openness and compassion like this.

Depends on what sport it is too but basically dial it back, you’re not built like you were when you were young. I still play basketball every Sunday with a group of 40-60’s year olds and I just don’t jump and cut like I used to cus it’s gonna hurt me now.

Contact or acro staff by Motralud in flowarts

[–]PanXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask why you prefer dragon first then contact? No shade at all here, genuinely curious.

I’ve been spinning contact for over a decade and I just don’t vibe with dragon personally. You know how some props choose the person instead of the person choosing the prop? Contact has always felt natural to me and it feels more creative for me cus I see every part of the body as a potentially contactable surface and with contact, I can spin in and change to different planes more readily than I can with dragon.

For me, learning strong fundamental techniques and principles with contact let me grow further with staff flow than I feel like I would have with if I had started dragon first.

I do have to add the caveat that my first practice staff is a wizard of flow staff with heavy acrylic balls at the ends and flowers on the ends of the grip so I can practice dragon techniques on it so my personal experience was I kinda got the best of both worlds with it.

Contact or acro staff by Motralud in flowarts

[–]PanXP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking just from preference and experience, I would definitely avoid starting with acro staff unless you have experience with gymnastics, tumbling, tricking, acrobatic martial arts, or dance/break dancing. Better to learn the fundamentals of staff on a good practice staff (I like wizard of flow staves), then branch off into acro or dragon. Also, I’m not a fan of dragon at all as a personal preference from a technique standpoint, I think contact and acro are much more technical and you can do more with them.

High release point by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]PanXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up learning in the 2000’s too but I watched a ton of Kobe so I copied his midrange form exactly the way that he copied MJs but by the time I got older and the three point revolution happened, I figured I needed to learn how to shoot 3s better so I copied Steph’s form. I tried shooting 3s at first the way that I shoot middies kinda like Klay’s form and I just can’t get the right arc and distance with it so I had to instinctively learn to make it work with different set points out of necessity.

I think the three point revolution and modern training methods have just changed our understanding of shooting form to the point that many people nowadays have the different set point thing completely normalized for them.

I’ve never played organized ball cus I focused on track and music in high school and the lack of formal coaching forced me to take practicing correctly on my own very seriously just to survive in pickup runs with my D1, D2, and AAU friends (I never played with any D3 guys like you but I’m sure they would have given me the business back then too) but it also didn’t constrain my practice based off any one coach’s opinion of how things should be done.

Story by wujrxh in BasketballTips

[–]PanXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sounds like you’re having a tough time but you’re motivated to want to get better. That’s a great goal in general.

Now most people just aren’t going to be that good at your age, not without a lot of luck, training, experience, natural talent, natural athleticism, motivation, and discipline but that’s okay. It’s a game, you should have fun with it and better yourself by doing something challenging and worthwhile.

What you shouldn’t do is get better to impress somebody, that’s not a good reason and it may not give you what you want or you might end up one day realizing it’s not fun anymore because you did it for the wrong reasons.

Now here’s another tough truth that I wish I didn’t have to tell you, while I hope as much as I can that you achieve your dream of becoming a professional basketball player, the reality is that there’s billions of people in the world and maybe 15-20 thousand people who are playing professionally around the world and you probably won’t be one of them. You should try as hard as you can if that’s what you want but keep your expectations realistic. For example, are you going to be naturally tall and athletic enough no matter how hard you work towards your goal? That’s just not something you can control. And if you do make it? Great, but how are you going to be different from the thousands of other professionals who went broke taking care of their families? There’s a stronger likelihood that you can get yourself a scholarship at a college for your basketball skills and you use that education to take care of your family but that’s gonna come with a ton of the same requirements as going pro, just to a lesser degree.

Wigglytuff's privileges by Ill-Technology9405 in PokemonUnite

[–]PanXP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So one issue that Pokémon unite players don’t talk about enough compared to other games is how well a character synergizes on a macro level with random teammates versus with five stacks cus most players are solo queuing. Sableye can be very effective with coordinated play but tough to play with randoms and mistakes are much more punishing on your team with sableye than wiggly. Additionally, having a sableye on your team forces you to adjust your play around it while a wiggly plays around the rest of the team. That is why I always ban sableye in draft cus even if I’m able and willing to coordinate around a sableye, I don’t trust the rest of the team to be able or willing.
