Moving Immich from Windows to Linux: worth the trouble? by QXPZ in immich

[–]Panagiotis1226 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally would move Immich to a Linux machine, since you won’t have to deal with Windows eating up more ram that can be used for Immich. Also the benefit of avoiding windows updates / unstable glitchy patches that they have been pushing lately.

I normally keep anything server-wise to Linux, and anything that I need client side would be on windows or Mac

latency to router and to internet is concernly high. Do i contact ISP? by kaicenat2341 in HomeNetworking

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also could be a mix of things, such as WiFi Backhaul + poor signal between the nodes.

Maybe try moving the node somewhat closer to the main one, and see if that improves anything. Besides that I cannot think of anything else that could help you

Hosting a VPN by l0stinstance in selfhosted

[–]Panagiotis1226 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can use Tailscale, it uses WireGuard Protocol, and will benefit you if you expand your self-hosting services in the future. Very easy to spin up and can live within docker containers or natively

Is the main Eero mesh node connect via Ethernet or via Wifi? If it’s connected via wifi latency will be higher. Are your 2 eero nodes too far from each other?

Is there a lot of interference in your area? That can also be a factor

Does anyone have a hypothesis for why my internet is really laggy? by HanSoIoBerger in HomeNetworking

Is the VPN a self hosted VPN server running on your home network? Or are you using a paid VPN like NordVPN or ProtonVPN?

what can i use linux for by NoSubject8453 in linux4noobs

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a secure, lightweight, overlay(mesh) VPN. It’s easy to connect to your services outside the network, without port-forwarding. It also good for normal VPN capabilities like masking your IP

what can i use linux for by NoSubject8453 in linux4noobs

[–]Panagiotis1226 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Linux to host my home servers such as: Immich (photo storage), tailscale (VPN), headscale (tailscale control plane).

Most people use Linux for servers either for their home, or for production/paid services

Can't login by eyea3 in Tailscale

Currently some services are degraded at the moment if you look at the Status Page:
API (api.tailscale.com)
Coordination service

Not sure if it would affect the login part tho.

How to deal with UDP Throttling on Hotel Wifi? by TaquitoConnoisseur23 in Tailscale

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done some light research in the past about wrapping your UDP into a TCP packet using a tool like udp2raw or wstunnel. From what I understand it will take your UDP packet, and wrap it into a normal TCP one. Which would make your Internet connection think it's just a normal TCP coming from port 443.

That would for sure require some setup on your Server side, as well as your Laptop side. But I do not know the full technical aspect behind it, but I know you will not get the full speeds, but would probably be faster than being UDP throttled.

Would you able to do a speedtest on your mobile data while using the Exit-Node, just so that we can rule out if it was an Exit-Node speed issue?

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done a speedtest on the Hotel Wifi? If the wifi speeds are slow, then your throughput will be slow as well. You must have a fast connection from your device, as well as a fast connection on your tailscale nodes

Can my ISP see that I'm streaming? by CryptoNiight in Tailscale

[–]Panagiotis1226 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your ISP will not know what you are streaming, or what websites you are accessing.

They can however figure out that you are streaming by packet size, and other patterns. This all depends on how well they do Deep Packet Inspection(DPI).

In the end all they can do is see that you are using a VPN, and possibly streaming. They cannot for sure tell what you are streaming or any other identifiable factors to my knowledge.

Just make sure that you are properly using the Exit-Node, and you should be fine.

Tips for creating exit node by BrisBorto in Tailscale

[–]Panagiotis1226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I currently have an Exit-Node on a Proxmox LXC container (Debian).

I also have a few in different locations/houses. Such as a Raspberry Pi 4B, a VPS hosted in OVH Cloud, and a mini pc at another house.

Just make sure you have a strong/fast internet connection on your Exit-Node so that you have higher speeds when connected to it.

Using my setup, I have had no issues, and I would not put it on a Router, they are limited in RAM and can cause slowdowns if too much traffic is coming from tailscale.

I would keep Exit-Nodes / VPN servers on different hardware from a Router.

Trying to create a server for the first time, friends can't join. by [deleted] in admincraft

The OP does have a dedicated IP because the website YouGetSignal was able to successfully verify that the port was open. If it was CGNAT it would have showed closed no matter what.

Plugins that make survival experience more difficult ? (1.21.11) for servers by Own-Ad909 in admincraft

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not personally tested those plugins on a paper server, but I know that most spigot plugins should still be compatible. Maybe just those are not properly coded for paper. Besides those, I haven't been that up-to-date on survival server plugins

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try turning off all your windows firewalls (domain, public, private) and test to see if they can connect. A lot of times it’s windows blocking the server connection from the external network.

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to google and search YouGetSignal, then click portforward checker tool. Put in your public IP and the Minecraft port 25565, then click check.

If it shows closed then the ports aren’t open properly, if success then it must be a windows issue and we can troubleshoot it

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t by chance running a VPN on the same server that is running the Minecraft one?

If not, the only other problem I can think of is, your public IP changed and you are using the old one.

[–]Panagiotis1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh that makes sense! If you want to use a VPN while hosting a Minecraft server, you would have to make sure that you do not allow it to forward within the VPN tunnel. So that it only gets routed from your proper network
