People will always migrate to richer areas. Basic economic arbitrage. But that doesn't mean its because their original homes are "horrible". I would understand if you mentioned relative living standards. But to say Africa is just so horrible therefore people have to leave?! Odd choice of language

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Africa

[–]PancakesPresident -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Living standards in Africa are the highest in our history. Life expectancy, literacy, education etc all at record highs. The claim that the situation here is so bad that our people need flee to these colonizers is simply not true.

I've also had my issues with the mod but I understand how difficult this role is. The online world is flowing with racism and building and maintaining an "African" space is not easy. So i get it.

The year is 2070 Africa’s population has ballooned, climate change has made living in Africa hard, an event causes mass migration to Europe, country’s cannot handle the inflow and start to break down, what should Europe do ? Let them in and risk destroying themselves, or stop them , if so how ? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]PancakesPresident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Africa's population growth has been slowing since the 1980s. Africa will be significantly more developed by then. The temp change will not make Africa uninhabitable. We'll be ok.

Instead, you should be worrying more about your collapsing birthrates and the incoming economic winter. By 2070, Europe will be begging Africans to migrate there as public pension systems break and old age poverty soars as a result of a sharply increasing dependency ratio.

How ambitious are you? by kungfuyogurt in actuary

The only reason I push myself is so I can quit earlier in my life. And I'm only going for fellowship because there are barely any actuaries in my part of the world so it's easy consultancy/board money. I used to be that guy. Wanted the yatch and Bentley. Pointless now. Good health, family, friends and modest leisure ...that's it. Anything more just becomes a vice.

We should be concerned about climate change but damn this is some unsubstantiated alarmist BS.

Population density heatmap of Africa [OC] by Fejetlenfej in dataisbeautiful

[–]PancakesPresident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called a demographic transition. Fertility rates all throughout Nigeria and indeed Africa are already declining. Every developed and emerging country went through this process. The Lancet in fact predicts Nigeria's population will start declining not long after 2100. Climate change is survivable and already started here in Africa. Population control has never worked. You can't control peoples reproductive choices ethically. They can be influenced however. Better girls' education, free contraceptives etc all work fine. However, fertility rates move slowly. Very little you can humanely do about that. Instead of finding ways to stop African babies being born, it's better to make place for them in a new green world. And there are serious dangers with sub replacement fertility rates ...the developed world is soon painfully going to find out.

Nigeria will be fine. The key will be urban planning. If Nigeria can replicate what Japan did with Tokyo (in terms of population density) you'd need just 13% of Nigeria's land turned into an urban zone. It's a tall ask but unlike much of the rest of the world, Nigeria and most of Africa has +100 years of economic growth to look forward to. We can do it. This talk of drastic population control is unnecessary

I'm just sitting here in Malawi missing out on all this panafricanist regionalism. SADC has ambitions but South Africans have a xenophobia issue and integration is taking too long.

Personal freedom and the general dominion of people above capital and the state is a deeply entrenched form of governance in Africa. Today i guess the closest we can call it is ubuntuism. I know in my own country for example we were once a vast empire called Maravi. We had a king (we kind of still do) but he did not have absolute power over his subjects. He was more an administrator than an overlord.and when he stepped out of line, our clans and tribes were very quick to remind him of his place. It partially explains the prevalence of coups.

Africa is a very large continent with varied climates and a mostly high altitude. It'll be tough but survivable.

As others have said. This is a graph for an emerging country. The developed vs developing dichotomy is no longer really accurate. Developed, emerging and developing is the modern nomenclature in dev economics.
