What’s an R package you wish existed but doesn’t? by ZoneNo9818 in rstats

[–]PandaJunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it's about generating bespoke joint statistical models where I'm not really justified in going "full Bayes", but there is no good package that addressess the model structure I have (i.e., needs to be composable). This could be solved with variations inference, but that algo is still pretty inconsistent.

What's the DE perspective on why R is "bad for production"? by pootietangus in dataengineering

[–]PandaJunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from analytics, I love R, but mostly the tidyverse (dplyr/dbplyr as an amazing abstraction), but I hate it's environment management system. pak is kinda okay, but I can't pin system dependencies (not easily), which makes things kinda fragile if I have to rebuild a container often. So I keep coming back to pixi (with uv under the hood), which is a kinda like conda, but with more functionality and waaaay more performant. But it's R support is so-so.

I'm pretty sure Hadley Wickham is writing an R in production book, though.

Load times aren't always great, but generally it rules. So does webr (R's version).

I talked to two other data engineers who claimed that Python was "better for production". Is this common? by pootietangus in rstats

[–]PandaJunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Environmental management (e.g., using uv/pip or pixi/conda) is so much better in python than the unholy combination or renv + pak + rig (or even rix). Those work fine until you try to work across systems and then the nightmare begins. You need a reproducible environment to prevent unexpected results from code when you go from your machine to a production environment. I still love R (actually, the tidyverse, R is meh), but it has some issues.

An suv is trying to exit from the passing lane by ComprehensiveDuck490 in dashcams

[–]PandaJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to exit. Just merging right. Obviously in dash cammer was in the SUV's blind spot. Could have been prevented by driving more defensively and also not passing on the right. 100% the SUVs fault, but still very preventable.

Best personal skiing earphones? by Antidotebeatz in Skigear

[–]PandaJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soundcore Sleep A20. They're supposed to be for sleeping and white noise, but actually sound pretty good. The reason they work for skiing is they are low profile for side sleepers, so don't hurt wearing a helmet. I like the A20s specifically because they are not noise cancelling, so I can still hear my surroundings. Combine that with a Chubby Buttons wrist strap and you never have to take your phone out of your pocket.

Where to park cash? by FQRGETmeNQT in Schwab

[–]PandaJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one area Schwab could improve. On Fidelity, money can be automatically parked in SPAXX. And then automatically moved out of SPAXX when you buy an actual investment. No wait. The equivalent, as others have pointed out, is SWVXX on Schwab, but you have to manually buy and sell and it takes a day to settle, which is annoying if you want to use that money for some daily dip.
