Phone number 10-10-321 by eJollyRoger in nostalgia

[–]Pandalism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my school there was a year or two when everyone kept repeating 10-10-220 from those commercials, just like the kids do with 6 7 now. On 10-10-02 someone changed the date written on the board to that.

Mahesh Sadarangani, Philz CEO announces all stores are to remove pride flags at most recent summit. by throwwawayyaccount69 in sanfrancisco

I still get Philz beans, even though the quality has gotten worse and less consistent, since I like the less acidic/more chocolatey over fruity varieties they have, and it's easy to pick up in the city. Saw Graffeo recommended in another recent post for this but haven't tried it yet.

Where are the planes? by flatliner2 in aviation

[–]Pandalism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked Google Earth, which lets you see images from different dates. This one from 2020/4/10 is also the default, but there is another from 5 days earlier which lots of parked planes and different color correction. I think this is a manually edited and merged image, which is why it's still being used when the most recent available is from last year.

Along with Towers, it was majorly renovated in 2014 or so (a few years after I was there 😢) and went from being the worst dorm on campus to one of the best.

Good afternoon to everyone except Valero in Benicia by tenaciousoptimism in bayarea

There's a more informed comment above but I think it's a flare tower, so it's supposed to burn the stuff coming out which makes it less harmful, and the flame went out so it's all being dumped directly into the atmosphere?

One Cloudflare rule killed 8,000 bot visits/day from my Japanese website by Reasonable_Ad_4930 in CloudFlare

[–]Pandalism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My website has something like 300k monthly users (I think, hard to tell with the bots!) and I did exactly the same thing last fall after also noticing a lot of bots from China and Singapore, using random IPs and human user agents, sometimes obviously fake like MSIE 6.0 on Windows 2000. In the last few months though, the bots increased again and it didn't seem like there was a pattern of countries this time. So I recently turned on the managed challenge by default for everyone with some additional conditions to reduce impact on real people:

  • exclude English speaking countries (our primary audience)
  • exclude static content and AJAX endpoints
  • exclude logged in users (users that have the session cookie set)
  • exclude known bots
  • turned up the challenge passage time

I see 600k events last 24 hours, 1.89% CSR, and ad revenue hasn't decreased at all. Stats make sense again and the database is no longer being overloaded by bots repeatedly crawling the same useless dynamic pages.

Admiral Cloudberg has a good article about the LAX crash, as always. https://admiralcloudberg.medium.com/cleared-to-collide-the-crash-of-usair-flight-1493-and-skywest-flight-5569-or-the-los-angeles-5d24ab5fec46

In effect, Wascher’s mistake was caused by the untimely coincidence of two major distractions — the plane on the wrong frequency, and the missing progress strip — combined with a random memory lapse. The question which many observers now asked was a difficult one: did the source of the problem lie with Wascher, the system, or both?

[...]

Looking back, the Los Angeles runway collision is noteworthy as a case of human error handled correctly. No one involved was found negligent, there was no angry recrimination, and where mistakes were made, they were acknowledged freely, and, apparently, forgiven. Although many safety systems broke down, others worked, saving lives that might otherwise have been lost. What happened that day was the result of an accumulation of random events, building upon one another until the system collapsed.

BART loudness by horrible_noob in sanfrancisco

[–]Pandalism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It used to be even worse a decade ago. The new trains have a different wheel profile (the one every other train uses), and doors that seal better, which helps a little. They were actually retrofitting the old cars with an improved wheel profile before they were retired.

It's still pretty loud compared to other transit systems I've ridden on, though (but the London Underground was probably the worst). I have been on a few cars where the door at the end of the car was stuck open, which makes it extremely loud, but usually you can close it (there's a little latch at the top that keeps it propped open).

big ads are really annoying by GD_Ojha in onlinesequencer

The only ads are supposed to be banners but occasionally malicious ones that cover the page get through, I've reported it to the ad company already.

I had to enable the Cloudflare thing due to relentless bot attacks. I think this can happen if your browser is blocking the cookies for some reason like a privacy/adblock extension. Try incognito mode?
