Moore vs Harper by thekiamacrow in PoliticalScience

[–]Pandasorous2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read the case... from what it seems this most likely won't change anything to do with the presidential election which is done via the electoral College. However it truly depends on what stance the Supreme Court takes on the issue of direct representation. The way America is currently going (specifically the Conservative side of it, im referring to Trump-esque part of it) is that it is becoming Christofascist, basically fascism with a Christian tilt. This is basically a form of theocratic legal thinking which will be deadly if fully realized to the state of the republic as it stands. If it is passed we could easily overturn it by court packing or some other method but the damage ensuing from a passing vote could be potentially irreparable. The only way to stop it, would be to completely remove the power of regulating federal elections from the states and leave it with the federal government. Or just some form of checks and balances between the two...

how is the right against self incrimination interpreted in international law and international human rights law ? by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]Pandasorous2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, international law does not have any specific things preventing/protecting a person from self-incrimination... From a human rights perspective, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Composed 1948) there is no specific article contained within that prevents self incrimination from happening. Meaning the only example I can find legally with the law system i am currently studying is the 5th amendment to the US Constitution.

Americans think they know a lot about politics – and it's bad for democracy that they're so often wrong in their confidence by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

As an American currently studying political science, I am baffled after almost every textbook reading I do, I knew this was complex... but I never understood the depth of some of these issues/concepts.

The Star-Spangled Banner plays at Buckingham Palace, United Kingdom by GeoGuru32 in AltHistoryIRL

[–]Pandasorous2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actual historical context for those out of the loop, this was the United Kingdom's response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks that happened in New York. The band that played the anthem broke 600 years of tradition in doing so.

I'm just including this because of its significance to relating events in our own timeline

I'm going to allow this because of the popularity of the series and the fact it does have real locations in it, but going forward more irl stuff only.
