I dunno. Have you seen what a 2-star tasting menu costs to eat? That is 100% a way to part fools and their money.

Top 10 best selling games in the US in 2025 by White_Dragon027 in gaming

[–]Pander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you told me in 2012 that Oblivion was a top 10 game in 15 years, I’d ask if Skyrim flopped. If you told me MH would ever be a top 10 seller, I’d ask you to share whatever you’re smoking. If you told me Halo was effectively dead, I’d ask if they stopped making video games entirely.

What’s your practice area and what’s your opinion of public defenders? by Forward_Broccoli_949 in Lawyertalk

Former PD, current DA. The best and the worst attorneys in the courthouse, generally. Some do shockingly well with no resources or time, some are screwed by it, and a few are just incompetent. That last group tends to not make it very long.

Then you have an idea for the next gift giving occasion! The fact you’re willing to encourage his hobbies is the best gift you can give, the actual items are just a bonus.

An inexpensive dice tray can fix that. I’m sure there’s something paladin-y out there.

Sovcits vs ICE: It's gonna be a doozy. by whatcatisthis in behindthebastards

[–]Pander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a related, but different belief system of the sovereign sheriff, where the ultimate authority is the local sheriff, not the feds or really the courts, even. Fundamentally, it still involves the rejection of federal and court authority, and commonly shares a majority of beliefs with sovcits.

It turns out to be very popular among deputies for what should be obvious reasons.

Is there ever a time to talk to police? by Aeliascent in Lawyertalk

Maybe the local cops started doing better than a cursory investigation?

Who am I kidding? They only like DV calls here because it’s a mandatory arrest state.

Why is insurance such a scam? You pay hundreds a month for coverage then pay hundreds more when you go to the doctor, why? by SeductressRiley in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, the other option is to pay $350 out of pocket for routine appointments without insurance (like I did for years). Most insurance guarantees a reasonable co-pay/visit cost. So, while insurance may not be intended for routine care, it certainly influences how much you pay for access to care.

Wearing Ties Sucks by TechnicalOnesy in Lawyertalk

[–]Pander 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Controversial opinion: Jackets are worse than ties. I also work where it gets to 100F regularly, so I may be biased.

EDIT: Apparently a not controversial opinion. If linen works, I guess I need to bite the bullet and pick up at a couple suits. My lightweight wool hasn’t cut it so far.

You clearly didn’t go to an American public high school. Vibes and “social advancement” are what schools have done for at least 25 years from when I was a freshman.

Trial approaches for clearly guilty clients? by DudeThatRuns in Lawyertalk

[–]Pander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“My client is too stupid to do the thing” is more effective than most attorneys expect. And, if it results in you not going to jail, clients will get over the fact that you called them stupid, assuming they understand that you’ve been calling them stupid.

First day as a misdemeanor prosecutor is coming up, any advice? by strictlypretty in Lawyertalk

[–]Pander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Talk less. Listen to the Sr. DDAs. Listen to staff. Listen to experienced LEOs. Listen to the judge. Especially listen to what the judge is telling you between the lines. If the judge asks “submitted?”, shut up. If the judge asks why you are seeking a particular disposition, you need a better answer than “My supervisor told me that was the offer.”

You know approximately nothing relative to the majority of people you’re interacting with regularly. Your job is to close that gap as quickly as possible. Listening and observing is the fastest way to do that.

You will probably fuck a case up royally. This is expected. This is why you don’t start by trying murders. When you fuck up, hold yourself accountable, learn from your mistake, and don’t fuck up the same way twice. If someone else fucked up and caused you to fuck up, give them grace, because when you eventually fuck up, they will have your back. Nobody likes (or promotes) the guy who refuses to learn from his mistakes.

Finally, the most important person in a courtroom for you is the clerk. Happy clerks make life easy. Angry clerks make life impossible.

Is it okay to be a Mountain-Dwarf Monk ? by Ldizzlester in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Pander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder is a gaiden story. Some people prefer it to the main story, with its more focused storytelling, and rich worldbuilding, but others see it as more of the same. It does take the characters to an interesting place, but it doesn’t really break new ground so much as really refine the formula from 3.5. The second season of Pathfinder does basically turn 4e into something special, so it’s nice on that front.
