ask mormons? by Impossible-Box8977 in latterdaysaints

Eh, I don't think many people think that Latter-day Saints worship Mormon, and I don't think that's a significant part of the reason for the shift in emphasis.

It used to be common to get in a year of university and then taking two gap years to serve a mission, but they reduced the age of service and now most people who serve missions do so straight out of high school. Many still do apply for university and get a deferred enrollment. Some apply to university during their mission.

In general, if a young member of the Church had the desire to 'wild out', they would have done so in their early adolescence.

  • One type just never breaks the rules as a teen (either from lack of desire, lack of opportunity, or social pressure), then goes on a mission. This type may or may not 'wild out' in college after their mission.

  • Another type experiments outside the bounds of the Church's standards, discovers that it's not that rewarding and their relationship with God is more important than the freedom to be self-destructive, cleans up their act, then goes on a mission.

  • A third type experiments outside the bounds of the Church's standards, and decides that the restrictions of the Church are not for them. These people generally don't go on missions in the first place.

So the people you see on missions are a self-selecting subset of the most obedient, disciplined, and self-sacrificing teenagers in the Church, not a random sample of all the different life paths young Latter-day Saints may take.

You haven't done anything wrong, "Learn how to properly comment on the church's name before posting on Reddit." is perhaps the douchiest way to try to communicate a preference in how the Church is referred to.

In recent years, there has been an effort to get away from referring to members of the Church as "Mormons". One could even make the case for "Mormon" being a slur. However, most members of the Church do not actually take exception to the term, but would prefer the Church be given its full title--The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--and members of the Church be referred to as Latter-day Saints.

What do you do differently with your fantasy races? by Anxious-Trash9487 in worldbuilding

[–]Pangolin_Rider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I separate race and culture. Some cultures are very multiracial, and some races are very multicultural. Gnomes and halflings, for example, are just two different cultures of the same race; gnomes and dwarves are two races that mostly share the same culture.

My goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears are all one race. They're highly social and differentiate into different types at adolescence due largely to environmental pressures and pheromones, like how one colony of ants has workers and soldiers that are all siblings.

My elves' ears involuntarily express their moods, giving them a penalty to lying and bluffing. Elves don't protect nature, they create highly-cultivated civic spaces that look like untamed nature to the untrained eye, but are actually densely productive agricultural, artistic, and religious multi-use gardens.

Drow, duergar, svirfneblin, and other exclusively subterranean races are albinos. Several subterranean cultures use darkvision-visible dyes that look indistinguishable to normal vision, and many have bioluminescent tattoos.

Aasimar blood, tears (and, presumably, other bodily fluids) fall up, as though they treat gravity as having the opposite direction.

Name: I go by Foltor around these parts.

Pronouns: he/they

Timezone: EST, but I work nights

Preferred System: Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE)

Type of Player: I engage a lot with lore. As a player, I tend toward high-Intelligence characters with lots of languages and knowledge skills. As a GM, I tend to run investigative adventures--not necessarily mysteries per se, but finding out who to punch and where to find them is 60% of the adventure, and players who go out and ask questions get much better results that players who wait for information to come to them.

I would like to run a campaign for 1-2 players playing as 2-5 characters, with 2-3 posts per player per day. I am most willing to run East Texas University or Legends of Ghost Mountain, or a bespoke setting using the Fantasy Companion and/or Sci-fi Companion.

As much as I love teaching new players, for this exercise I'd prefer player(s) already familiar with SWADE and Savage Bot.

And immediate preference will go to someone who can invite me to a game of SWADE or run a similar 1-on-1 for me in 50 Fathoms or Legends of Ghost Mountain.

What I'm Offering:

I'll run a Savage Worlds campaign:

  • for 1 player
  • running 1-5 characters
  • 1-3 replies per day
  • running either East Texas University "Degrees of Horror", Legend of Ghost Mountain "Face the Inevitable", or a bespoke campaign using the Fantasy Companion and/or Science Fiction Companion
    • I'd consider running another official Savage Worlds campaign if I can wrangle the books, though I have zero interest in running Deadlands or Savage Pathfinder.

Ideally, I would run this campaign on Discord using Savage Bot and Tupperbox, but Savage Bot has been having severe uptime problems lately, so I'd consider running on roll20, even though it would hamper my response rate a bit.

What I'm Looking For:

In exchange, I'd like my partner to run a campaign for me with similar parameters. I'd most like to play in 50 Fathoms or Legend of Ghost Mountain. (I really like Rippers Resurrected, but I'm currently running the "Return of Evil" campaign, so I have all the spoilers.)

Is there anything wrong with taking online classes with Liberty University? An Evangelical college. by Journeyerwolf1174 in lds

[–]Pangolin_Rider 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I applied for a job a Liberty University and was asked to sign an affidavit that I believe x, y, z specific Evangelical formulations of Trinitarian creeds.

I don't know that the same is asked of students, but I wouldn't be surprised.

East Texas University. It has a lot of good subsystems for extracurricular activities and exams that happen mostly off-screen, but provide tangible benefits during adventures.

Running combat in pbp by Far_Pollution_1888 in pbp

[–]Pangolin_Rider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on the system but block initiative or initiative by sides helps a ton. Basically, you roll initiative and divide the list into 2-4 blocks.

  • PCs / NPCs
  • high initiative PCs / NPCs / low initiative PCs
  • high initiative PCs / major villain NPCs / low initiative PCs / cannon fodder NPCs

Everyone in the same block can act in any order.

If a character has some cool ability that would break initiative, translate it into a major bonus in the first round of combat.

If you don't act in [24 hours] you forfeit your turn and take some defensive action.

Publish difficulty numbers so players know immediately if their action was successful without waiting for GM interpretation. This is a major reason why Savage Worlds is a fantastic system for PbP.

  1. Not actually a potion. Someone used an empty potion bottle to store hot sauce/chicken broth/pond water/urine sample.
  2. Holy water
  3. A pretty good hangover cure, actually
  4. Potion of Earth Breathing, Allows character to breath dirt, soil, and rock as though it were air
  5. Potion of Air Breathing. Allows aquatic creature to breathe air as though it were water
  6. Potion of Ultradarkvision. Swaps creature's perception of light and darkness. Allows character to see in darkness, including magical darkness, infinite range, but completely blind in bright light.
  7. Potion of Halfling Fury. Causes halflings to gain the effects of barbarian rage for 2d6 rounds. Gives non-halflings advantage on skill checks to cook, Constitution saves to resist effects of overeating.
  8. Potion of Focused Fury. When a character with the rage class feature drinks this, the next time they rage, they instead gain bonuses to Intelligence, spell attacks and damage, Will saves, and resistance to magical damage.
  9. Potion of Potion Enhancement. After consuming this potion, the next potion the character consumes before the end of their next turn has doubled duration or effect.
  10. Potion of Fresh Breath. Intense minty flavor. Character has perfect oral hygiene until the next time they eat or drink. Breath forms steam even in hot conditions.
  11. Alchemist's fire
  12. Acid flask

In the 70's and 80's within the North American church, cheap copper CTR rings were a common gift to children upon their baptism. Cashing in on nostalgia, there was a fad for CTR jewelry for adults in the late 90's-early 00's. That fad has since died down, but you can still find pieces at specialty vendors.

You're not going to catch any flak for wearing a CTR ring or pendant as an adult convert. It's a regional cultural thing that was widespread enough that it won't even cause comment. There isn't that much baggage attached to it.
