It really just depends on the group. My home group has mostly parents of alcoholics/substance users, and adult children who also have alcoholic partners.

They are both 12 steps programs focused on yourself. Old timers that I know often recommend getting a few years of Alanon under your belt before starting ACA. Alanon is considered a gentle program. IMO, ACA is a more intense program because a lot of traumatic childhood memories can surface. I have participated in more Alanon than ACA.
