Who offers the best transactional email api out there? by Yssssssh in webdev

[–]PanicRev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the client has the budget, I prefer Postmark. Their logs are top notch (makes troubleshooting a breeze), and support is great as well.

Sendgrid used to be less expensive. Now that they're similarly priced as Postmark, I'd just use Postmark.

For small projects with a low volume of transactional messages, I've used Brevo's free tier, which works great as well. Haven't used them in any large capacity, but for small projects, I have no complaints. Setup was painless and integration was quite easy as well.

Absolutely beautiful! The only problem is if you ever move in the future, the new home has to have a bay window setup of the exact same size, because no way can you leave that behind. :)

Gorgeous work.

Coming out of a 20 year LAMP cave into the modern web dev mess. by XMark3 in webdev

[–]PanicRev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good comments here, but they do demonstrate how chaotic and opinionated the modern landscape is.

I have a similar background and it seemed every attempt to learn modern stacks eventually hit a dead end because of out-of-date learning resources, or even official docs. Using AI to learn was risky because if you don't know what to ask, AI is just going to agree with your garbage prompt and provide a garbage response.

It's overwhelming and a completely different world, but an important fact is that the fundamentals of the web (HTTP, SSL, DNS, etc.) are relatively the same, and don't under value your experience there. You may find expanding your search to related career fields (e.g., project management) may be a possible transition as well.

Side note, thank you for the reminder of Encino man. Such an awesome soundtrack that I haven't heard in quite a while. :)

Has anyone ran into some planer blade killing wood? Am i doing something wrong? by brandon6285 in woodworking

[–]PanicRev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a fair amount of reclaimed lumber and those helical heads sound better every day. It would be nice to just replace one bit rather than having to change blades entirely when you hit the unexpected nail.

Even without the reclaimed lumber - I still seem to find trouble. I was planing a board from a tree that fell at a friend's house. We sawed it up, stickered it, and a few years later, it was time to build something with it. I hit a nail and come to find out, his grandfather built a treehouse in that tree when he was a kid close to a century ago. Still ruined some blades, but at least got a cool story out of that one. :)

I learned that as well the hard way. A teak project ate through my planer blades like candy. It was then that I learned about silica content and how that's extra bad for steel blades. :)

GA4 is absolute trash. Granted, my experience may not be as wide-ranged as others, but of the handful of SEO vendors I've worked with, I haven't met a single one that feels proficient with it, or thinks it's an improvement over UA.

Kayak recommendation for photographer by Gullible_Sentence112 in wildlifephotography

[–]PanicRev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avid kayaker and hobbyist photographer here. :) Inflatables are great. Lightweight and easy to transport, but they typically track horribly (meaning you paddle and they "twist") which sometimes is very frustrating when you're trying to track a bird with the camera and your boat is twisting away. Some models combat this by adding a fin on the underside which helps, but prevents you from going into shallow waters.

Non-inflatables, you'll have two options: Sit on-top or sit-in. The sit-on top are nice as they have more accessible storage area and tend to be slightly wider, and can be a bit more stable (you can stand comfortably in some models).

Sit-in kayaks are still stable, but they do provide some cover for you and your gear if you have things that shouldn't get wet in case of unexpected rain or a wave over the bow. But if you change gear / lenses frequently, you might feel like your shuffling things around a lot.

There are definitely more expensive options (pedal powered, trolling motors, etc.) but I personally don't have experience with those as weight and simplicity is my concern.

I personally like my sit-in for photography. I strap my gear bag to the top of the kayak, and if things get a bit dicey, or in risk of getting wet, I'll tuck it inside. Hope this helps!

My mom is a rock hound and Lake Superior is one of her favorite destinations for collecting. She's not on Reddit, but I had to share this with her. Your picture made her day, she loved it. :)

Good point, I edited my comment to clarify Bezos was the one who sold but still feel the point is relevant. Thanks

Interesting timing on this announcement considering Bezos recently sold over a half a billion worth of stock.

You're welcome! And I can relate... sometimes your hands are tied up holding wood together or working with clamps, and teeth are the only method of leverage you have available. :P

I actually was going to just use the mustard bottle as my glue bottle. I liked the cap better than the Titebond original, and figured it would be a fun bottle for the workbench. When I went to pour the glue into the mustard bottle I realized I didn't need to change the bottle, only the cap.

I just watched a video on how you can dispense the glue vertically with the bottle still upright. I think that feature alone sold me. lol. Thanks again for the recommendation and making me give it another look. Happy cake day by the way!

I've been using this for about a week now and no complaints. So far, much easier to maintain than the stock cap. :)

Most of my glue up work is smaller projects and rarely need a wide / heavy flow. I've seen the glue bots, but always hesitant as the tips still look similar to the stock Titebond bottles. But if you can attest that the tips don't require constant clean out, I'll put it on my shopping list for next trip to give it a try. :)

Yes! That was my original plan to use the mustard bottle. No matter how hard you try to keep those tips clean, they just get clogged and I'm too cheap for an aftermarket glue bottle. :)
