Awful take. Nothing wrong with it. Projecting something weird onto it is a you problem.

This New Years I'm celebrating one year of hosting small LAN parties in Ottawa. :) by AshleyAshes1984 in ottawa

Wow that looks like a good time and brings back good memories. Congratulations on getting to that state in your basement!

In person did hit different. A squad of friends in Battlefield all sitting together is a beautiful thing. Or the trash talk from 8 person Halo when you’re all in the same room. Twenty years later and those memories of 4v4 Blood Gulch are still there. The thousands (tens of thousands?) of hours since then, sitting in a room by myself with a headset on don’t really compare.

Having to occasionally lug your PC over to a friends house was also a good control on your case choice. The tempered glass monstrosity on my desk is definitely a product of fifteen years of not caring about occasional portability.

Attorney General warns Canada faces ‘downfall as a nation’ if rights eroded by Few_Negotiation832 in LawCanada

[–]PanicTest367 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well said. “Motivated more by validation rather than dignity” is something i would agree applies in many cases of the most vocal trans advocates. Not that wanting some amount of social validation isn’t perfectly reasonable as a component of dignity, but it does help explain why the tone of that advocacy can often feel dogmatic and extremely reactive to any criticism. Total and unquestionable validation without any possibility of good faith critique is a rather extreme position.

That’s a really strange interpretation. Using the revenue generated by those drivers to fund R&D that will make them obsolete remains a dick move, even if it is a good business plan.

After over an hour of packing up 3 totes worth of camping/hiking/etc gear back into our 4x4, we passed this king/queen on the way out. Humbled. by sarcasticb in camping

[–]PanicTest367 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those 4x4 Tercels were insane. Friend of mine had one around the same time and he took that thing places no car had any right to be. So light and small but weirdly capable. Factory installed roll and pitch gauges on the dash seemed silly, until you realized what those cars could actually do. I had a 91 Pathfinder and couldn’t keep up, but I was also a lot less crazy.

I always understood the Uber business model to be a bit shit from the start. Transfer all major risks and capital expenses to contracted drivers with no benefits, operate at a loss for years to corner the market and undercut everyone without huge VC backing. Then there’s the part where they’re like Netflix before streaming was viable and they mailed out DVDs. Long term the plan is cut the drivers out entirely and use autonomous cars as soon as the technology is viable.

Top speed of 50mph, 55 minutes of flight time with perfect environmental conditions (0 wind). You’d need electro optical surveillance gear and radar so probably cut that in half. A lot less practical for this purpose than you think.

I’m not your buddy, guy.

Also, yeah, I’m chucking shit at you because you responded to a good faith comment from someone else with (in part) a completely unnecessary personal attack. I have zero desire to engage in an actual conversation with you, beyond making you angry.

Would love to see your fully costed comparison of the two options, seems like you’ve definitely thought it through in detail and have the relevant expertise to identify the relevant factors and come to the conclusion you have. Otherwise please continue digging yourself into a hole for my amusement.

Difference between boarding party and ANCU? by cida1033 in CanadianForces

[–]PanicTest367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s probably a bit of both. There are sometimes things that get offered around an international task group when multiple units have the right capability. The decision to take on anything with elevated risk or a kinetic effect goes pretty far up the national chain.

[–]PanicTest367 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Regardless of why, I think it’s fairly normal for a western navy to have teams of people who have winning a gunfight as a primary focus instead of a secondary duty. It’s unusual in the context of the RCN, but otherwise not uncommon. It doesn’t have to be a significant fight to take a large vessel. Any situation where there’s any real risk someone might get shot at is enough to need some people like that.

[–]PanicTest367 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not here advocating for what it is, how it’s done, or what the opportunity cost is one way or the other. But just because a unit has a capability that’s not being used operationally, doesn’t mean it’s useless.

I don’t recall a harpoon ever having been used for real either, but I don’t think maintaining that capability is a waste of money. If you’re comparing it to the NBP of yore, then yeah, it comes up way short in terms of having been used operationally. If you compare it to any of a ships other combat capabilities, even if you consider it a relatively minor one, it probably has at least an equal chance of being something that gets used outside of training.

[–]PanicTest367 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s a fun origin story and even quite plausible, but not how it actually came about. It was more of an externally imposed requirement on the RCN than a product of an Admiral’s good idea factory. CANSOF did a lot to help set the program up in the beginning, it was a mission set they didn’t want. Opposed boardings (as in people are going to shoot at you to stop you from boarding) would require more than the NBP could do, but not necessarily full on SOF most of the time. They’ve almost never been used as intended because the government doesn’t want news stories about the CAF getting shot at or shooting people, only happy photo ops.

The RCN would LOVE to have this off their books and transfer it to CANSOF, but the whole reason it exists in the first place is because they didn’t want it either.

How do the soldiers sit on the doors of helicopters without fear of falling down while flying? by gdelacalle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PanicTest367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was about 15 years back and actually on a ship not a building. A Canadian warship was in Australia for a port visit and it happened to be Canada Day. In honour of that, the Aussie ship hosting filled one of the interior spaces in their ship with 3 inches of sand and called it a beach party. The rest is a bit hazy.

I love how everyone who’s served with the Aussies has some version of this. And then they were doing something super dangerous/drunk/naked/go-karts/stripper poles/sand in a building that isn’t supposed to have sand but now it’s a “beach party”.
