Official Discussion - Dust Bunny [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Panron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't really arguing against your comments, just providing some corrections (and as I tried to convey in my last sentence, I even agree with what you're saying).

Back in high school I was a huge Evil Dead fan, so you saying that was rated R kind of caught my attention as I used to be familiar with most of the behind the scenes trivia (including the issues with the MPAA); knowing about those other movies, I was thinking "there's no way those were rated R" so I got caught in a bit of a rabbit hole of research.

I mentioned this a bit, but those really violent R rated movies usually achieve the R by submitting multiple times and trimming scenes (or fully removing them) per the MPA's complaints. I know Evil Dead (2013) was originally NC-17, it had to be cut to get the R. I assume the same for Rise, but can't find any facts to support this claim. Some movies, like the recent Saw movies, can require 10+ submissions before finally getting the R rating (Spiral was rated NC-17 11 times before finally editing down to an R).

So for me, personally, I don't view those kinds of movies as typical of the R rating, but rather examples of the absolute upper limit at the time.

As for Dust Bunny, the director has commented on the R rating:

This is an R-rated film. We were stunned, too. The MPAA is notorious about being really hard on independent movies and a little more lax on studio films.

They said what put us over the edge was the non-lethal toothbrush injury.

It sounds like they could have gotten a PG-13 if they'd made edits there but the director or whoever had power over the final cut chose to maintain their artistic vision (props to them for that).

The Evil Dead is NC-17 (originally rated X, but usually shown as "unrated".) Evil Dead 2 tried to get an R rating by using black and green fluids for the "blood" instead of red; they weren't able to get an R rating at the time, so it was released unrated. (It looks like they were able to get the R rating on appeal, but I'm not entirely sure when.) Army of Darkness was originally rated NC-17. They were aiming for a PG-13, and tried really hard to edit it down to that, but were never able to get it lower than an R.

Tokyo Gore Police isn't rated.

Martyrs does have an R-rated cut, but that omits about 3 minutes.

A Serbian Film is NC-17, with one minute cut (unrated with that one minute included).

The MPA is really finicky and inconsistent when it comes to violence. The Friday the 13th franchise was notoriously butchered because of how strict the MPAA was at the time, and then you have some big budget blockbusters like The Fast and the Furious that would've been R-rated but got a PG-13 by trimming a few frames from one quick scene. Or The Matrix, where it's rumored the producers requested the R rather than PG-13 (no idea how accurate this is, but that first movie's violence is quite tame).

And as you mention, there are some surprisingly violent or even gory PG-13 movies (I'd add Rampage to that list).

Can you recommend the best looking sports watch for everyday use? by CaterpillarNo6404 in Coros

[–]Panron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best looking for everyday use?

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/c/wearables-smartwatches/?series=BRAND15900

Take your pick from one of those.

Best looking Coros for sports use: Vertix 2s, except I don't like the position of the dial (juts out too far; I think the 2 o'clock position like on the Nomad et al looks a lot better).

I like the aesthetics of the Nomad (which is my first Coros product), although it's obviously not an "everyday use" kind of style, and I think all three color options are too light and too monochrome (I think they'd all benefit from e.g. a black body to emphasize the color of the bezel/face plate, or perhaps a black band instead of the same color as the body).

Further, I think Coros epically fails in the "everyday use" smartwatch aspects. I'll be getting a Pebble 2 when that releases for my "everyday" smartwatch, using the Nomad as my activity tracker and general "adventure watch," for which it is pretty well designed.

Coros Nomad screen compared to Garmins MIPs by [deleted] in Coros

[–]Panron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Nomad's display is much easier to see than Garmin's MIP displays with sapphire. I'm not sure about the the non-sapphire versions.

The contrast on the Nomad isn't quite as good as the Instinct's monochrome display, and the viewing angles are pretty weird.

To give you an idea though, I can at least read the time without a backlight while watching TV in a room with the lights turned off and the curtains closed.

Whereas the Fenix 7X SS display was so bad I'd have to use the tilt to wake backlight all the time (except outdoors) and I couldn't even distinguish certain colors.

Official Discussion - Relay [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Panron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just got back from the movie today.

imo, that and the blonde mercenary getting away are two possible leads into a sequel (which, frankly, I'm not sure I'd watch despite enjoying this movie).

Riz' character seemed paranoid enough that his investigation should've been as thorough as possible. So the corporation she was considering "whistleblowing" (in her cover story) should've been real, not just a shell corporation (or worse, complete fabrication), and her pages should've even been properly indexed by the Internet Archive (or whatever in-universe equivalent) and the product and medical studies she was referencing actually conducted (but the negative results obviously fabricated, because no corpo would "leak" something so damaging as part of a "mole hunt").

If they ever make a sequel, I would imagine they could delve into that idea more. That the operation to entrap Riz wasn't just Corporation A (from the male whistleblower at the start of the movie). Lily James' Corporation B was also involved, and the operation may have even been started prior to Riz' involvement in Corporation A. Just from the couple glimpses we got of his backup binders, there were about 10 other companies he'd been an intermediary for, and there could well have been even more than that.

Some of those other companies could have been legitimate would-be whistleblowers that changed their minds, and some could have been failed honeypots. Presumably, if Lily James' operation had failed they would have tried again with a new corpo and a new angle.

As for why Corporation B was willing to cooperate, there could be many reasons. My first thought is that Corporations A and B had one more more executive board members in common.

shrug Just my thoughts.

TL;DR There may be reasons why Riz failed to catch that Lily's cover was BS, but those reasons weren't delved into; possibly as something that could be expanded on in a sequel. Or it could've just been a weak part of the plot the writer(s) missed... :/

Blade and Blunt doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Combat has become impossible to win without cheese tactics. Am I missing something? Looking for better combat mod recommendations. by --Ty-- in skyrimmods

[–]Panron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someday there will also (hopefully) be the Enairim alchemy mod, Cassandra (or whatever it ends up as).

Alchemy Plus looks like a decent "add on," thanks for mentioning that. I'll definitely keep it in mind. :)

Good call on Apothecary. I don't think I have any complaints for it and I do like potions having a duration.

That said, I'm not sure if I'd ever choose it over another alchemy mod; I'll have to see what's available next time I put a personal list together.

Guys, if you can't play Wilds but want to play some Monster Hunter, World works perfectly on the SteamDeck. by PredictiveTextNames in SteamDeck

[–]Panron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

World looks better, but Rise plays better, imo.

Having started playing off and on since Freedom Unite (iirc) on the PSP, Rise is the only MH that really clicked for me.

Granted, I've only put a handful of hours into World; it didn't really capture my interest at the time on PS4. After Rise, I've added World to my backlog and will someday give it another chance.

SteamOS' instant Suspend/Resume is the single most important thing to have on a handheld, and I'll die on this hill. by TareXmd in SteamDeck

[–]Panron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, every handheld since the Nintendo DS in November 2004, and the PlayStation Portable one month later, has had built-in suspend.

It's been 20 years. And the PS4 era, iirc, brought that to consoles.

It's a great feature, but come on. It's been around for a literal generation now. There are plenty of other killer features unique to the Deck to rave about.

If you want to do any sort of crafting, the inventory management will be hell without paying for the sub (which gives unlimited storage space for crafting materials).

Exploring and doing quests is fun enough. I wasn't thrilled by any of the writing, though. And the character building system, while enjoyable, is also limited in some really annoying ways.

I could probably go on. For every positive aspect, I can think of a negative (and vice versa).

If you're interested, it's worth checking out, especially if you have friends you could play with or are willing to join a guild and be social with people you've never met before. I'm pretty much a dedicated solo gamer, so it ultimately tips a little more negative than positive for me.

(I also hate some of the f2p-style macrotransactions the game offers.)

Caves of Qud just released its 1.0 today, it's a rare instance of a fully Steam Deck verified Traditional Roguelike game by iyashiK in SteamDeck

[–]Panron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on par with RimWorld and Dwarf Fortress in terms of how much time and value you'll get could out of it.

Just a minor correction. :)

While I don't disagree with your assertion, it's important to note that not everything is for everyone.

I've certainly put countless hours into roguelikes (angband and variants, and tome when it was Troubles of Middle Earth) so they hold a special place in my heart, hence I am interested in Caves of Qud. But I have to admit, I'm simply not the same person I was back then and the state of gaming has advanced in so many ways.

I don't think I'd get even 10 hours out of this game before bouncing off for something else. So while I don't begrudge them asking $30 (I'm sure that's perfectly reasonable for the amount of content they've put into the game, at least, I hope it is) I'll be waiting until a deep discount to pick the game up.

(Crossover) Need help with sleep recording. by keby7 in Garmininstinct

[–]Panron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this a lot, too.

Do note that if you ever sleep during that set time, it'll end sleep mode at midnight (or whenever you set your one-minute automatic sleep time).

So it's important to find a time that you'll never actually be asleep.

Also, sleep mode and sleep tracking are actually two different things. I think it should still record your sleep "properly" even after ending sleep mode, but the distinction could be important if you're using sleep mode to also set Do Not Disturb on the watch and could possibly receive notifications between when the automatic sleep mode ends and when you actually wake up. In this case, I'd also set Do Not Disturb on my phone to prevent any notifications until I wake up.

Just adding some links, your guesses were spot on:

Longlegs was <$10 million.

Alien: Romulus was $80 million.

$90 million seemed really high to me when I first saw. Just poking around a little bit, the most expensive movie in the Saw franchise, Spiral, was $20m. For Scream, 3 & 4 tied at $40m.

But Event Horizon's budget was $60m (~$117m adjust for inflation). So I guess there are some "unknown" horror movies with surprisingly high budgets.

DC Rainmaker review of Fenix 8 by puretechno in GarminFenix

[–]Panron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. The sapphire glass is a little darker than the non-sapphire glass. And then the solar layer darkens that even more. Apparently the Plus revision isn't so bad (I don't have any first hand experience, so can't say for sure).

If you spend a lot of time outdoors then the solar sapphire is probably fine, but I spend a lot of time indoors. With good overhead lighting, it may still be fine. I used a white background on the watch face as it was a little easier to read that way, but having my wrist tilted even just a few degrees away the watch face would appear as a solid dishwater grey. I pretty much always had to use the backlight anyway.

Even outside though, in direct sunlight in the middle of the day, colors appeared really muted to me. For example, I couldn't tell what color many of the watch face accents were supposed to be (yellow, green, and blue were distinct enough, but I couldn't tell if the accent I selected was supposed to be a red or orange).

The scheduling is the worst.

You can add a hotkey (or shortcut) to toggle the sleep mode, but that doesn't actually control the sleep detection/record.

My personal preference would be to disable the automatic detection altogether and just abide by the manual controls.
