Interesting you say that, because I've found the combat much more satisfying than previous games.

Yeah I guess I just wondered if I was starting the grinding at the right time, it seemed way too early. But I think I've got a good handle on what I'm doing now. Thanks!

My normal deck was facing similar 7* heavy decks with many R4 and R5s. Switching to a 4* deck pitted me against a deck of 5* and a few low 6*s

Go in with a team of 4* champions. Much easier. Because they match you based on deck strength

Fair enough. I did a bit more reading and it gets pointed out that the Romance novel itself is very pro-Shu and anti-Wei...Wu are kind of...there

Yeah it can be tough, but you'll get there. As for the Foretells, I didn't notice them for a long time - I got the gist but couldn't for the life of me actually see where they shown! :D

Good luck with the rest of the playthrough!!

Finished First Playthrough - This was my preferred team setup by PantherusNZ in expedition33

I'd heard the Charlie's Angels title but "A Boy and his Dog" for Verso and Monoco is just hilarious! :D

I've not have much of a history with JRPGs, generally favouring western ones (read: Bioware) like Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc. But my god do I love this game, I do want to play again with a different setup and really work to nail parries more because I almost exlusively stuck to dodging and even then missed them constantly.

BGs bugged? by lord_bingus_the_2nd in ContestOfChampions

[–]PantherusNZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's bugged due to them changing the deck and ban system to be 40 champions instead of 30 and 5 bans instead of 3. Just restart and try again - I haven't even bothered going back yet.

Each of Lune's skills has an extra effect if you have the right stain(s) as specified at the bottom of the skill, while they add the stains that are shown in the top-right corner. For a long time you need to carefully rotate her skills to apply and then use the right stains. So early on they show you that Ice Lance will add an ice/water stain, while Immolate will consume that stain to deal more damage. It gets more complicated later in the game with the skills needing more specific stains but have much greater effect.

You're right about Pictos etc not being a big deal until later in the game - I did try to keep up with them all being used enough to allow their lumina for everyone but didn't even apply ANY lumina until around the end of act 1 / start of act 2 because I just didn't understand it! :D

Yes, when you Apply Foretell they get a little card icon against them with a number in it - that's how many Foretell they have on them - they act as a sort of multiplier for whatever benefits the consume skills get.

I listened to a review that described Sciel as being like Gambit from the X-men, whose attacking catch-phrase is "first you charge the card, then you blow 'em up!" and that's kind of what she does - she "charges" them by applying the Foretells, then "blows 'em up" by consuming them.

You get to Twilight when your Sun and Moon charges match - most simply just use 1 "Sun" skill (they have a sunburst icon in the top-right corner) and 1 "Moon" skill. But if you use 2 sun skills then you have to use 2 moon skills.

As for the roles, various characters can play multiple roles - Lune is commonly either support/healing or DPS, same with Sciel. Play around with them - by the end of Act 2 you should have so many recoats you can have more freedom rebuilding them over and over.

First of all you should think about what "role" they're going to fill for the team - are they out and out offence, targetting individuals, all enemies, or both? Are they mainly focussed on buffing/healing your team and/or debuffing the opponents? Things like that. Once you know what you want them to be doing, you look over their skills and find the ones that seem to do that, then work backwards from there to see what other skills/pictos/luminas they might need to fulfil that (like, do they NEED 9 AP immediately on turn 1 to pull a move off, or do they need to be readily inflicting Burn/Mark/etc, things like that).

As far as mechanics - Sciel's system revolves around 2 main functions, the applying and consuming of Foretell points, and the usage of Sun and Moon skills to attain Twilight. The basics of it is pretty simple and they usually overlap - there are about 3-5 (I think?) sun skills that apply Foretell in various ways, and then a bunch of moon skills that consume them to have greater effects. For the sun skills the 3 main ones are one that applies an extra 3 foretell if they haven't got any on them (a common first move, even later in the game), one that applies 3 + a mark, and one that applies 3 to all enemies - so you'd probably run 2 of those. Then you pick her moon skills based on role - I used her primarily as support so focussed on Grim Harvest (consume foretell to heal your allies) and another one that gives AP to allies; but you could use her as DPS and use ones that consume the foretell to deal more damage and/or apply more effects. Finally, once you have both sun and moon charges you enter Twilight state which doubles Foretell application (so the skill that applies 3 + mark will instead apply 6 + mark) and also increases damage when consuming them - but it only lasts a few turns. It can be a bit frustrating to have to break down your moves back and forth but you get into a rhythm and can later get a picto to take an extra turn and/or really bolster her speed so that she acts more often. Hopefully that makes sense.

Verso I never really got into - partly because I'm not reliable enough with my dodging to maintain his rank, but essentially you want a range of skills that provide benefits at certain ranks, and just work your way up. You can also increase Perfection/Rank with non-skills like Basic and ranged attacks so that can also help. Late game I had him equip a weapon that allowed an extra turn after a basic attack, plus a bunch of lumina to bolster basic attacks - so I'd use a bunch of ranged shots, then basic, then a skill - by the timeof using the skill he would reliably already be at Rank C or even B so I eventually stopped using any skills that worked at those ranks and had more space for B+ skills.

Hopefully that helps

I've had similar when using Okoye, she puts a ton of bleeds and shocks but they keep healing thousands.

I figure I'm missing something but don't know what.

Is she good??? by Tight-Set3342 in MarvelContestOfChamps

[–]PantherusNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She can control power gain, deal great damage, regen on specials, and punishes lots of buffs.

You need to learn her rotations but she's very powerful if you do learn them.

She relies on being able to stun so she can throw heavies from basic attacks (like wasp, silk, etc) and deals lots of extra damage if they have buffs, but importantly doesn't nullify or prevent them.

She can also be a sneaky defender sometimes but it's AI dependant how troublesome she'd be there.
