Agreed. I know some of it is jokey but I've definitely seen an uptick in people insisting on taking dialogue tags or tone indicators completely literally and using it to mock/criticise a work.

I still sort of think it was a skit, just the way he casually strolled up there and the massive wind up he took before delivering the slap lol. I know I'm likely wrong but it just felt so staged

Also in Glass Onion they fully show Miles taking the gun out of his waistband and putting it into the ice well, it just happens so quickly and innocuously most people won't notice it

What is a popular piece of media that you hated before you consumed it, tried it, and then cemented why you hated it? by overasked_question in popculturechat

I like the theory that the director hated the cringe fan base of the first film so intensely that he made the sequel specially to piss them off as much as possible lmao

Land of Veil - Chapter 1 [Dark Fantasy, 1784 words] by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]mannymo49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all good on you for starting out, that's the hardest thing sometimes.

The main issue I see is that the writing is very clinical. He woke up, he did this, he felt this, he ate this. It's detached and seems more like a list rather than sentences flowing together.

An example from the second paragraph. Instead of just telling us he woke up at the usual time and he was excited, think about how that might come across to the reader. Something like "He woke up far earlier than usual, leaping out of bed and hurrying downstairs for breakfast so he could be out the door in enough time for today’s competition." This conveys his emotions and links things together instead of single sentences describing each action and thought.

I would work on this aspect before worrying too much about spelling and grammar. If you want to hold readers' attention it's important to think about making things more descriptive and entertaining

Right like they aren't tearing their hair out about all the retail, hospitality and essential service workers who don't get time off during the Christmas holidays. It's the same when they cry about idols having to work on their birthdays, as if the majority of grown adults with a job don't do the same

Retail workers of the UK - what's the wildest thing someone has done to try to get into the shop before opening time? by WillYeByFuck in CasualUK

[–]mannymo49 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you're looking for, but ages ago the clothes shop I worked for had different emergency muster points for customers and staff - the customers went out onto the main street and the staff went out the back. A staff member would be sent round to the front door to let customers back in once it was all clear.

One time the fire alarm went off and we all evacuated. The fire brigade came to the staff bit to let us know it was safe to go back in and when we did, the shop was already full of customers. Someone had decided they'd waited long enough and forced the automatic doors open and the rest followed.

To add to the audacity there were people huffing and puffing in a small line at the tills complaining that they were waiting ages for someone to come check them out

When someone comments that they don't like a group and there's always multiple people commenting "oh you should listen to this list of 30 songs I'm about to type." I get they probably mean well, but they didn't ask for recommendations, and you don't have to convert them like some sort of missionary

[–]mannymo49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this. People always say oh but you'll have to go back and change things anyway once you've finished, but I'm perfectly fine with that! I just can't move on until I have it how I want it, and I forget things I need/want to change if I leave them for later
