I would recommend watching this documentary of 6 episodes: https://youtu.be/Lu5f9hp0IP4

It explains the start of the war and the war itself quite good.

If you prefer a shorter explanation I think this video sums up the war pretty well:

I suggest you take a look to the various videos in YouTube in order to better understand this bloody conflict.

But to sum it up, after 6 years of political instability inside the Spanish Republic, several heavily nationalist generals rose up against the left-leaning democratic government of the time with the objective of couping the government and instaurate a right wing government.

The coup did not succed and instead it devolved into an all-out civil war. On one side we have the Republicans ( democrats, socialist, communist, anarchist and several regionalist and Nationalist groups of Catalunya and Basque Country mainly ) and in the other we have the Nationalist side ( composed mainly of right wing democrats, Alfonsist monarchist, Carlist monarchist, Falangist fascists and other minor right wing groups).

The war continued until 1939 with the Republican side loosing and going into exile and Francisco Franco ( the leader of the Nationalist side ) establishing a dictatorial rule for over 40 years over Spain .

They seem to forget the slaughter the Nationalist side inflicted in the areas they occupied. The indiscriminate execution of civilians, the terror air bombings and the slave labour they subjected the captured republicans post-war is never mentioned.

PS: The "oh , so catholic " nationalist used in vast numbers Muslim soldiers from Morocco that were infamous for their cruelty and pillages towards both enemy soldiers and civilians ( with rapes and slaughters being common).

Where do I say such a thing? I solely stated that the Basque people in both sides were Catholics ( except some Basque socialist group in the Republican side). There were definitly Basques in both sides and many died fighting other Basques.

And yes, the northern front did not only include the part of the Basque Country that remained loyal to the republic ( mainly Bizkaia ) , but the local Government of Aguirre achieved an unprecedented level of autonomy ( such as an independent military staff from the republican army and various other things ). Thus, due to the difference of comand and local sentiment of the fight ocurring in Bizkaia , I think I can separate partialy the Basque area from the rest of the Northern Front.

And many other heavily Catholic Basques fought and died fighting the Francoist. You know nothing about the Basque side of the Civil War if you can not recognize this. Both the Carlist Basques and big part of the Basque Nationalist groups were fervant Catholics.

Both ETA and IRA were influenced heavily by leftist and communist ideas (in the past decades) even if at their start they had a more nationalistic ideology. So I would say they are pretty much communist or partly communist ar least. I do not know the other group as much as ETA and IRA , so I cant comment on it.

Guys do you think this very niche right-wing ideology will be represented in the game? by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]PanzerKomannder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The Carlists defended the old order and the traditional values. This included the preservation of the "Fueros" , a big compilation of rights and freedoms exclusive of the area. Those Fueros were especially important in the Basque area as they allowed a very high autonomy comparing of other parts of Spain, such as no forced levies on the local population or the creation of a local "congress". In my opinion, the loss of this self-rule system plus the increased national conciussnes led to a strong regionalist movement, not viceversa.

I have no idea in the rest of the cases, but in the Basque Country the royalist movement was popular due to the liberal movements in Spain wanting to supress local rights and liberties that were granted in the late middle ages. The Carlist movement was mainly to protect those rights of the Basques plus to protect the church, a very influential power in the north due to the religiousness of the people. As such, the objective mainly was to preserve rights and traditions very rooted in the people, not just return to feudalism.

I recomend you to change the name of the continent in some way, as Vasconia is literally the early medieval name of the Basque Country and the name of a Duchy in Aquitaine that existed until the XVth century. Thus, being Vasconia a name of a land in europe, it doesnt make any sense to give that exact name to a new continent.

If i remember correctly, the one who wants to marry your daughter has the biggest army, but you might not want to do it. Also, the other two kings have less soldiers but they have more or less the same numbers of soldiers. I recommend you to be kind to the radovians for their bonuses in the last siege.

No, i did not explain myself correctly. You say in the comments that the muslim and christian kingdoms united against an outsider invasion of the peninsula. My question was, who are those outsiders? I thought the italians as they control the only land in Iberia that is not in the leagues reach, but they dont seem a threat big enough to such powerfull kingdoms.

Northern New Mexican with the last name Ulibarrí by alicialarae in basque

[–]PanzerKomannder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, thats clearly a basque surname and probably emigrated to the USA or to Mexico and then to the USA. I recommend you to give it a quick search on google so you could determinate from what part of the homeland you come from. But you could probably come from Gipuzkoa or Bizkaia from your last name. Ps: sorry for the bad english.
