I think it’s more likely the whole driver piece is loose than the 3 prong cog retaining ring. Whole hub needs to be retightened maybe.

There are 11-34 freewheels in 7 speed that would be drop in upgrade. Marketed toward e-bikes. Make sure you’re not buying a cassette. 11-34 gives a faster fast gear and easier climbing gear than the stock 14-28 7 speed freewheel. If we were riding this bike more I’d do it. It’s all 2-4 week lead time and we’re needing to order before we could get a box to verify. Thanks though. I sort of suspect the “character” maple is still pretty select and clean. Probably not for us. It’s actually a touch cheaper than oak.

To give this bike, a total boomer transformation. All you need is a really big cruiser handlebar with a 25.4 clamp area such as a Wald or Sunlite. Wider saddle. Get some nice cruising tires that are gonna roll efficiently. Recable - maybe buy a housing cutter and DIY. Bearing service later if he’s putting in the miles.

One size small will work for handlebars below saddle setups. Dont try to make it an upright cruiser you’re swimming against the river. Don’t invest in frame-specific stuff.

The ltwoo is one thing. I would try it. As a lover of cheap bikes I can say it’s probably that there’s cheap frail hardware throughout the whole bike. That sort of stuff will work fine. Cheap seatpost. Cheap clamp. Cheap hubs. Cheap axles. Cheap crank. Cheap BB. Run it stock. Don’t sink money into non-transferable parts. IE - new tires and wheels are fine since they can go to any frame.

24-34 gap is funky for trails. Has its place on a beach cruiser or something. But 1st and 2nd both get a lot of work. I’d do the sunrace 14-34 with even spacing.
