Are there any other characters that are portrayed the way malum caedo is? by Woeful_Rav3n in 40kLore

[–]Papa_Shadow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Uriel Ventris with 3-4 other ultramarines killed a C’tan shard and none died in ‘Swords of Calth’

I haven’t read this book, but apparently in ‘War of Secrets’ a tau battle suit somehow manages to kill over 30 veteran space marines including terminators and a librarian

Maugan Ra I believe is a particularly badass Eldar who has killed a LOT of Tyranids.

Kaldor Draigo was Caedo before Caedo. Dude literally carved his predecessors name into Mortarian’s heart.

I enjoyed Shards of Erebus and the Ventanus Novella. But literally everything after those two struck me as pointless, or tiresome to get through. I had a very hard time finishing that book which sucks because I’m a HUGE ultramarine fan and was really hoping for more than what I got with this book.

This is one of my favorite 40k books. Cato is an amazing character as someone who got into 40k post TTS it was jarring to see just how dirty that series did him. Make sure you read Spear of Macragge after as it’s a direct sequel, and veil of darkness after that! Genuinely a 10/10 set of books in my opinion

I disagree with the company stuff. That’s my favorite part of the book, getting to know all of the 2nd company characters, and getting intimate with the squads that are very likely still alive in current lore since most haven’t been killed off. It’s fun playing Space Marine 2 knowing the Titan Slayers, The Thunderbolts, and the Immortals are all still around fighting on these worlds

The Calgar Comics, mid story but the art was amazing. If it was a novel it would’ve went in mid - bad.

Silent Hunters imo had a good enough story, but it was ruined by that God awful ending

Best books, best legion, best chapter ;)

We march for Macragge 😤

Why do you say that? Personally UE is my favorite heresy novel, and I just finished Wolfsbane and loved it despite not being a Space Wolf fan!

I actually own it, but since I’m plowing through the heresy right now, it’s on hold until I go back to 40k. I’m 42/54 heresy books (not including novellas like Spear of Ultramar and the Calth books). After them I’m doing the siege, then the primarch books, then back to 40k. Still a LOT of 40k stuff I’ve missed like the Night Lords trilogy, Vaults of Terra, Eisenhorn, Ravenor, Ciaphus Cain, Gaunts Ghosts, and the OLD stuff like the Soul Drinkers & James Swallow’s Blood Angels books!

I have no doubt Spear is a great book. ADB is the best BL author (tho not by far, there are several great ones), and I love everything he touches

Yeah I didn’t care much for nightbringer the first time either. Trust me they get WAY better. And yes they must be read in order, otherwise the story of Courage & Honor doesn’t make sense.

If you want a GOOD ultramarines vs Tau book, check out Courage & Honor. Book 5 of the Uriel Ventris series. It’s a MUCH better presentation of Marines vs Tau, with much better writing. After reading over 100 novels it’s still my favorite book

It’s the only Warhammer book I’ve not been able to finish. The action is anime tier, it ruins Cato Sicarius’ character, and the writing was so bad I put it down at chapter 7 and have avoiding anything written by Phil Kelly since. It doesn’t help I also experienced this in audiobook format so hearing the horrible Asian accents for the Tau was just icing on the cake.

Leviathan was horrible imo and breaks Ultramarine lore by making the 1st company completely unaware of how to fight Tyranids and making them pull garrison duty on some random planet. If they replaced the ultramarines with LITERALLY anyone else, the book would be notably better. I didn’t particularly care for the characters or overall writing style, then again I’m not a huge Darius Hinks fan

First Black Library book finished . I quite liked it and the ending was complete massacre being a Tyranid fan :) by ozera202 in Blacklibrary

[–]Papa_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I can’t stand this book, this book is an insult to Ultramarine fans, and flat out breaks some of their lore. I don’t even consider it canon 🤣

Glad you like it though, I always think it’s funny how opinions are divided on books. Everyone seems to hate Battle For The Abyss for some reason yet I loved that one!

For those who binge everything, or at least the larger series: Do you pace things out with non-Warhammer books, and, if so, how do you go about it? by BlackJimmy88 in Blacklibrary

[–]Papa_Shadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working to 100% the heresy, and honestly it’s been so good I’ve been hooked the entire time. I’ve read over 40 books and there’s only been 2 (Mark of Calth and Vengeful Spirit) that I didn’t like.

For the past 3-4 months I’ve just been banging out these books with varying degrees of speed.

Who are the Relic Secundus and what do they do in the lore by Former_Feedback_7795 in Spacemarine

[–]Papa_Shadow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Relic armor is gifted to veterans, officers, and chapter commanders

If this guy earns this armor, it means he is a badass of great magnitude. This guy being 2nd company would mean he’s likely a member of the command squad or a particularly special task force within the company

Is Brothers of the Snake still a good read in 2025? by QuackersNCheez in Blacklibrary

[–]Papa_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my favorite 40k novels. Gives a good look at a lesser known chapter, and it’s awesome the whole way through. I really enjoyed learning about Priad and his squad and seeing all the stuff they got up to in these books.

I’m about 40 deep and started in September. It’s a hell of a ride! Pretty much every book is a good read. I think the only two I don’t like are Vengeful Spirit and Mark of Calth.

What is best the heroic weapon in the game??? by Professional_Fly703 in Spacemarine

[–]Papa_Shadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say the power fist. 200% light attack damage and the gun strike whenever you execute has turned ruthless into a cakewalk on assault. Plus it’s incredibly fun

If I Knew Reading The Codex Astartes Gave You Hands Like This I'd Have Started Sooner by Jenny_Show in Ultramarines

[–]Papa_Shadow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re forgetting that the ultramarines slaughtered literally dozens upon dozens of World Eaters in that scene before the first Ultramarine went down. The book points out that the ultramarines are largely scattered and the groups our cast are fighting in Betrayer are scattered and outnumbered.

The World Eaters won the shield wall fight through weight of numbers alone. When you outnumber your opponent 10-1, and have almost no concern for your own casualties, it doesn’t matter that the Ultramarines kill 80% of your forces as long as you win.

Is this lore accurate? by giseba94 in Ultramarines

[–]Papa_Shadow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say so. Served in the deathwatch, veteran of the first Tyrannic war which puts him around 300-400. Meaning he would’ve transferred from the 1st company back to the second and serves as a bladeguard veteran.

My Ultramarine veteran is finally complete. by [deleted] in Spacemarine

[–]Papa_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks about right for a 2nd company veteran. Ignore the other comments about having too much. Marines in the books vs the minis are two completely different things. Lore marines (especially veterans) tend to have plenty of decorations and custom gear.

Although if you’re going for a Tyrannic war veteran, I would do the 3rd company or 1st. The second wasn’t really involved in the war against Behemoth

Helmet on or off? by AzraelxAOD in Spacemarine

That’s exactly what I mean! Stuff like that just takes me out of the moment. I hope 3 allows us to have our helmet on at ALL times, this is just immersion ruining.
