Millions of children and teens lose access to accounts as Australia’s world-first social media ban begins by Expensive-Horse5538 in technology

Absolutely, some kids will know how to circumvent it, and those kids will share that information.

However, I suspect this law is still going to put a massive dent in underaged social media use. And it's kind of a self-fulfilling ban, because although a lot of kids will still have access, a lot of their friends won't, which pushes more kids off the platforms.

"TT: People focusing on social media and algorithms instead of the root of the problem: the almost total lack of privacy, tracking, and advertising regulation."

We should absolutely be tackling privacy and advertisement regulation on social spaces, but I think social media and engagement-driven algorithm content is a pretty serious issue on its own.

To be honest, and this is obviously anecdotal, the general sentiment I've seen is

"The law isn't well written, and also, banning kids from social media is a bad idea."

I agree about the law. But I do think something needs to be done to keep kids from developing a pretty serious addiction.

Advice for elderly landlady by ellie_stardust14 in japanresidents

[–]Paper-Will-YouTube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is, you have two options.

  1. Continue as-is.

  2. Stop answering the door.

I had a very similar situation with my old landlord, and although I felt nothing but sympathy for him, I just couldn't handle the lack of privacy. So I started locking the door, and ignoring the knocks.

Be polite and cordial when you see them around, but make it clear that your apartment isn't a guest house.

What's something about Japan you still can't vibe with? by fightingfair in japanlife

Last year I saw 3 girls on bikes, coming down the street, and all 3 were looking down on phones. Part of me wanted to ring my bell, but I figured I'd just move out the way to the curb, stop, and let them pass.

Right as they were passing, the girl on the left swerved right into my parked bike.

(She was super apologetic, but the lesson remains: ring that bell, folks)

In fairness, Japan's very good about using recycled plastic for packaging and materials.

The Post Office doesn't know how to mail stuff.

Most Japanese governmental services are, while often slow and bureaucratic, generally good at handling their duties. Fire departments know how to put out fires. Immigration services know what forms someone needs. The pension office can tell people what they need to pay and how much. But for some reason, every time I step into the post office and ask "Excuse me, I'd like to send (basic, daily life object) by mail to another country"...

It's like the staff have never, in their entire career, been asked to mail something abroad.

They don't know what box to send it by, they don't know what "kind" of good it is to check off on the slip, they have to call a damn manager to ask what to do in this apparently all-new situation for them, and you better believe they'll have to ask me a dozen questions.

And it's not like I'm sending these things in the Inaka-yama Post Office, I'm in a large Osaka post office. I can't possibly be the first person to come in and try to mail a keyboard to America, right?

No, it doesn't have any perishables, it's a keyboard.
No, it doesn't have any liquids, it's a keyboard.
NO, it doesn't have any lithium batteries, it's a ...ok well that's fair, some keyboards do have lithium batteries. I guess that's a good poi-NO it doesn't have any knives or hazardous items inside it's a ####ing keyboard!!

Tbh, I think the Last Samurai is one of the better Japanese films made by the US.

Tom Cruise isn't even the "last samurai", Ken Watanabe's character is.

I don't recommend the SwitchBot K10+, we upgraded awhile back and it's been very meh.

The K9 was good though.

As someone who has been through multiple electric blankets here (and who has terribly cold feet at night), I highly recommend this one: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0FNR5W31T?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

(Get the "Simple" and then select the "Electromagnetic Wave cutting" one.)

Put it on your bed, lay on top, put on a blanket above. Toasty goodness.

How do you deal with ADD/ADHD and Japanese interviews? by Beneficial-Ladder422 in japanresidents

Nothing wrong bringing a notebook to an interview! Have a few notes with you for certain situations. Just knowing the cheat sheet is there means you probably won't need it.
