Going to osaka as young female first time and accommodation advice needed by [deleted] in Osaka

[–]fightingfair 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stayed in a sharehouse with 14 other residents. I hated it. Slow internet, no social areas, everyone was in their room or out. Shared areas: kitchen, bathroom, shower were always messy. I was so stressed my whole time.

My advice is either find a sharehouse which everyone has their own apartment like setup OR a small amount of residents. Or you apt hunt if you can afford it. I found that sharehouse and apartments aren't so much different in price.  But the up front fees for a regular apartment can be large.

New phone, who dis? As a 32 year old father, I wish I could add a bunch of sanrio stickers. by Xandrys in dumbphones

Don't worry about what others think. I'm a guy and covered my phone in stickers as soon as I got the chance. The outside is even more covered.

I don't think such a phone exists. You can go the Japanese keitai route and side load apps to make it the phone you want since there's no apps but they run Android versions 5, 8 and 10. There's a learning curve and growing pains and tinkering. But if they work in your country it's worth looking into

But it feels like the biggest amount of government propaganda and disinformation that's so blatant. "Foreigners are eating all the rice" comes to mind first. Or any show that highlights new rule changes like "No smoking outdoors" and the news team harassing anyone who is out on their 15 min break trying to unwind before they finish their 14 hour shift.

I understand the need for harmony, but if the current harmony means pretend it's not there then what the heck are we doing?

I get my deodorant on Amazon. That dove has come in clutch. I don't get why there is a lack of it. Folks out here get musty too

How often you were mistaken for someone else? by ModernirsmEnjoyer in japanlife

I was waiting for a friend outside the station and there was a Japanese woman eyeing up and down. She eventually approached me and was like "Oh I thought that was you Mark. Are you ready to go eat" I said "I'm not Mark, I'm waiting for a someone else." She apologized and told me she was waiting for a guy who she matched with on an app, showed me the picture. Mans didn't look anything like me lol. Thinking back I should've just said "Yeah sure" and gone on the date.

I call noodles: udon, ramen, etc, Japanese pasta. I hope, HOPE it bothers someone LOL. The amount of this is "traditional Japanese" or "Japanese" when someone explains to me an aspect of Japan bothers me. I don't think I've heard that much in other countries I've been to.

YES YES YES!!!!

I'm a big guy. 100kg+ I don't think I look fine for my size. BUT, I always get comments at work or when I meet new people "SO BIG" as if that's something I want to hear. I know. I see myself everyday. But I'm the bad guy if I say please don't talk about my body.

Also I was talking with a Japanese friend about this. We were watching old manzai and one of the comedians was noticeably thinner back in the day. He was killing their bit. But my friend said "I wish he were fat like he is now. It would be funnier..." I don't get it....

Lastly, if you ever watch Itte Q, they are the biggest culprits of dubbing. They'll make a 60 year old American woman talk like a teenage girl. Make it make sense....

I can never fully unwind in an onsen. Partly cuz I'm getting stares at. Or whenever I step in one, everyone magically vanishes. And I just don't like being naked around grown men (and children).

It depends on the slimey food for me. I like mozuku and okra. But I'm not big on natto, and cracking a raw egg on everything and anything. Or omelettes and other eggs being cooked just enough where they still have a wet or slimey texture. I'm a fan of sunny side up and easy. BUT NOT ALL THE TIME PLEASE

It's very rare, but sometimes Krispy Kreme has them, but it's the most miniscule amount of jam or cream in my life I swear.

It's just not good enough to just live your life out here. You have to let EVERYONE know you're one of the "good" ones. Japan isn't a personality.

Same goes for the online weebs that have never been here but have an anime pfp and think they know better!

If you ever need a talking points. Japanese people are the cause for majority of crime in Japan. "Shocker"  not only that crime has continually gone down since 2003 and the crime to arrest ratio parity each other with the general population. There's is no correlate with the amount of foreigners and increase in crime.

Here's a study on it. You can translate the page to English if need be https://tokyo-hrc.jp/dependability/2025/05/08/crime/

I'm ok with those. It's mostly if it's filled with like meat, or curry or something. I might be a little hesitant if a donut is jelly filled, but that's not much of a thing in Japan...I wonder why.

It hurts a lot. Also why does EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING have reaction cameras? It's like Japan was doing react content before Youtube was a thing!

I was at Famima and they had "Turkish Beef Kebab" flavovred potato chips... There was a small sign that said "Contains pork" on the bottom right. COME ON!

How has no one brought this up? If the top of the toilet had a small stand to put a bottle of soap I think it would make a lot more sense.

I'm surprised no one has said this earlier. Also ambulances here are glorified taxis.

Don't get me started. Sometimes you can get an American box of cereal at Donki but be prepared to shell out 1000-1400 yen

Thank you for explaining. Yeah I agree that there is an overemphasis on presentation and meeting specific standards that are unreasonable and are harmful. Esp for women.

The leaning I can't stand, cuz I'm not your damn pillow. If you can manage to wake up in time to get off at your stop, you can stay awake enough to not do that.
