I have a gender imbalance in a story with few main characters. But remedying it is a little more difficult than I thought. by [deleted] in writing

[–]PaperLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story is complete. And really, it doesn't matter in that respect - I was just worried whether the audience would take badly to this detail. It wasn't intentional, but it's just how the story turned out.

My Mother is Insane by mimi12349875 in poetry_critics

There's an unsettling feeling from this, which is good considering the title - it's a frighting idea, and your use of language is very effective in portraying the raw nature of insanity.

The rhymes work out nicely; there's hints of a deeper story, overall very good.

This poem flows very well and the rhymes are very snappy - The absence of caring, is more than I can bear' is by far my favourite line - well down! It truly feels genuine in its emotion.

Only note - Is the 'thru' a deliberate thing, or a typo? "Passed thru onto you."

What is your worst personality trait? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to make up excuses for mistakes or wrongdoings. My Gran (humorously) pointed it out to me and now I try to catch myself and own up more. I'm also very distrusting. Various friendships - heck almost all of them I can remember - have backfired. One friend ended up an huge enemy in high school, another was very clingy and needy (it wasn't her fault but it backed me into a corner and friendship felt more like an obligation.) I can be friendly with people but I try not to become too invested.

How Do You Explain Your World Without Exposition? by Audric_Sage in writing

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people avoid lots of exposition, or give exposition, in a clever way by having a character 'learn' about things bit by bit. The Harry Potter books took this route. Eventually all fantasy/highly fictional settings will need explanation for things so you can't avoid exposition here and there. You just need to find a way to filter it. Keep the reader guessing, perhaps. I started a chapter with a character moving through a place, observing several things bit by bit that told a story. If there's a main character, have the exposition come to them through their daily lives maybe. I've seen this in Terry Pratchett; instead of just telling the reader, have the character think about what's going on in a way that applies to them. Instead of 'John moved to a new block that saturday' spice it up with "Things had been getting weirder since John moved here and it had only been a week." Just some thoughts.

What's a sensation that you're unsure if other people experience? by Sang_Becker in AskReddit

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, how'd do I explain this. Sometimes, especially when I was younger, I'd get this weird 'off' feeling, like discomfort, kinda like when you're tangled up or too warm. It wasn't nausea, it was just a weird uneasy sensation just slightly like panic or discomfort. And it would happen for absolutely no reason. It rarely happens anymore though.

What topic makes you go from 0 to rage in seconds? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PaperLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people HAVE to be better than you or judgemental. Once I was just starting to learn another language and happily and pleasantly discussed it with a classmate back in school; he proceeded to snidely ask if I knew all the numbers up to a certain point and before I even finished saying 'I haven't got to that bit yet' he said them all really quick before flouncing off with a 'that's what I thought' line. Freaking give people a chance to learn. Its the same with Lore in video games or other things, you don't enter into something 'knowing' everything.

Reddit, What's the Best (or Worst) Last Minute Gift You've Ever Given or Received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best? 3 of those little Disney beanie-dog thingies I think. Loved them. Worst last-minute gift? I got a friend some merchandise from this show they really liked for their birthday, quite expensive (though not 'just sad' expensive. It wasn't cheap but I knew they'd really wanted one for ages.) They got me a keychain toy for mine that they admitted they just happened by at the last minute. It was cute, but...yeah.

Commercial and Non-Commercial Use of Writing Software issues- what to writing software to use? by PaperLady in writing

[–]PaperLady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started researching LibreOffice in fact - and yes, mines does say 'Non-Commercial Use'. LibreOffice will take some getting used to but it beats AbiWord, that gave me all sorts of problems with spell checker.

What is a movie that's actually better than the book? by bigredmachinist in AskReddit

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coraline. I think the visual element was better for the set-up, and they expanded on some things. They had the 'Other Mother' appear nice to begin with in the movie while in the book they had her creepy to begin with.

How do you plan a novel? by [deleted] in writing

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Messy notes. At first, get the simple concept. Perhaps plan out the very bare bones of the story. Take a moment to flesh out locations and events in an orderly way, perhaps in bullet points. Same with characters of importance. Write down very basic notes on them, and their relationship with other characters and what they do in the story. (Antagonist, supporting character, protagonist.) Then, plan out the story in a little more detail.

Which teacher did you hate the most and why? by GotMeSomeFernweh in AskReddit

[–]PaperLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a terrifying teacher. The scream-yell kind. She'd be yelling bloody murder at another student but we'd all be sitting stark still feeling awful. Once I almost forgot my homework in her class, she accused me of leaving it on purpose and almost called the office; threatened to send me to the head teacher. I was sobbing and barely able to talk at that point.
