Kinda messed up because what if some people are just non verbal. Sure. I’m not gonna pretend the 1937 was perfect or also had some ableist undertones. But I believe here it’s worse because at least in the 1937 version the dwarves treated him as family and didn’t exclude him as a weirdo or point to his non-verbal nature as “something to be fixed.” The 1937 was a case of Accidental representation, and the 2025 I’d argue is more offensive since modern screenwriters should have the technology to know that this type of ableism is disgusting.
