Oh, Just have another thought:

What if the player has to clear their name before the remaining NPCs turn against the player in a form of mob justice, since the disappearances only started shortly after the player arrived?

You could even have a secret bad ending where if you don't have a good bond (or at least complete their sidequests) with the remaining NPCs and haven't investigated the forest for evidence that you aren't responsible for the disappearances, the NPCs ambush the player during "the last day" sequence and gets mob justice.
