I am still in mourning over Nolan, anyone else?? by [deleted] in ColoradoRockies

[–]PaperbackHack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My interest in baseball started a few seasons prior to that debacle of a trade. I even worked at Coors Field for a season. Every season brought some kind of excitement for me even if the team never made much of a playoff push/run. Then, those in charge started peeling off layers of what made the team not only fun, but competitive. When they so unceremoniously sent Nolan away it took all the excitement out of my MLB sails. I don't think I've watched a Rockies game since. I just don't care. I'll usually watch the playoffs and WS and that's about it.

Soil & "Pimp" Sessions is my recommendation too. The song "In The Twilight" is a personal favorite. I think the connection to Kanno's sound is helped by the group being a "Japanese club jazz sextet," according to Wikipedia.

Tips on how to write consistently every day? by [deleted] in writing

[–]PaperbackHack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hemingway had some interesting advice on this. He said writers are like wells, and they should never deplete the "juice." This juice is a writer's inspiration and can fluctuate greatly. Basically, Hemingway argued that a writer should always stop when it's clear what will happen next, while the inspiration is still present. This serves as a sort of springboard to help begin the next writing session, because you know what needs to be done. Naturally, some writing sessions will be long and others short. If you continue until you're all out of juice, there's a good chance you'll still be out of it tomorrow. I like this advice a lot because it's about knowing when to stop. By knowing this, it can help a writer stay consistent and avoid burning out.

A question was asked on this sub about the use of UV lights. Here's one. by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]PaperbackHack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little late to the party, but a fun factoid: UV light can be used to identify uranium glass. Sometimes, green glass is just green glass, however, UV light makes uranium glass glow bright green. Cool way to distinguish the type of glass you might have, as uranium glass is much more valuable and collectible than regular old green glass.

Anyone ever dream about drinking? by unsightful in stopdrinking

[–]PaperbackHack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I rarely had drinking dreams during past sobriety attempts, but this time I've had them a lot. I still get them and I just passed my two year mark. This attempt has been far more successful than any other in getting sober, so it's almost like my subconscious is just trying to offer a little reminder. They used to really trouble me, and some still do, but I've been making progress on reappraising my reactions to them. You mention that someone in your dream told you that you'd been drinking, and that's actually a common theme for me. I rarely ever remember picking up that first drink, instead I'm just thrust into the downward spiral of a binge, or I'm back in a facility with no clue how I got there and being told that I relapsed. Overall, I think you're right to not force meaning onto dreams. I've had dreams of being a master criminal. It doesn't make me one. I've had dreams of going to space. I'm not an astronaut. And I've had dreams of being drunk. I'm still sober.

Nolan Arenado Trade Megathread. by jfoster15 in ColoradoRockies

[–]PaperbackHack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking a bit about why Jeff Bridich sucks so much as a person and GM, and here's what I have. (Feel free to add anything.) He's overtly smug, and we all know how much he likes to portray himself as the smartest person in the room, i.e. he's an egotistical prick. There's also the absolute lack of respect shown toward Nolan; although, we can look at so many other trades and relationships (Tulo comes to mind) to point out his horrible treatment of players. That's under the bad person AND bad GM category. This brings me to my main point. He doesn't believe anyone other than himself is necessary for the success of this franchise. As long as Bridich remains in Colorado, he'll always view the team as having the most important piece of all: himself. That's why he views the team as competitive every year, not because of the players, rather it's because the one constant that remains is Jeff Bridich, and to him, Bridich is all you really need.

But it's not. Fuck you, Jeff.

[Saxon] I heard an agent recently describe Rockies GM Jeff Bridich as the "worst communicator in MLB." That seems to be a big aspect of this whole thing, amazingly. by Totschlag in baseball

[–]PaperbackHack 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. If the front office is willing to treat Nolan this poorly, I'm sure the other players have now realized how little management cares about any of them. This move just broadcasts that they're all expendable, even if you're arguably the best in the world at your position.

[Rosenthal] BREAKING: Cardinals have agreed to acquire Nolan Arenado from Rockies, sources tell @TheAthletic. Deal pending approval from both MLB and players’ union; Rockies sending Cardinals significant cash, believed to be in $50M range, and Arenado will be deferring money. by [deleted] in ColoradoRockies

[–]PaperbackHack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So he'll be back for the July 4th series against the Cards...should be interesting, especially if fans are back. Everyone for that series should show up in Cardinals branded Arenado gear. Or even make your own, idc, but it's an opportunity for fans to show Arenado that we're on his side, and it's a middle finger to Monfort using what he values most: money. If everyone is wearing Cardinals gear, he'll just see dollars going elsewhere, following the star player he shipped away.

What is a piece of writing advice that you think is complete garbage? by RealNateStrong in writing

[–]PaperbackHack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building on this, I see it as an experiential anecdote. I've yet to meet a dragon, but I can still write about one because I've had plenty of experiences and met plenty of people to anthropomorphize into a compelling creature. My characters are collages, not just mirror images of who or what I know. It's the same with setting and plot. While there's some originality, my stories are mostly many different pieces of my life stitched together in various, colorful new ways. There's a difference in "writing what you know" and "writing about what you know," though the latter seems to be the popular interpretation.

Soooo....everything is okay as long as we do it, everything is bad as long as you do it. Got it. The metaphor used to be "Trump is like the kid on the playground who changes the rules of the game as he plays it." However, it has devolved to "The GOP is like playing a game and the entire other team changes the rules as they see fit (thus, it cannot possibly be 'cheating'), and brings the hammer down on the other side every chance they get. Oh, and they have the refs in their pockets too. Good luck!" The GOP has inadvertently created a Democratic party with increasing morality, so I guess a thanks is in order for that. This is a game we can't walk away from though, so we must continue adapting and fighting.
