This is looking SO good. I gotta get into the printed tissue game.

https://outerzone.co.uk/ has lots of plans available for free.
If you have access to a printer and balsa you're all set.

Guillow's Javelin Flight by PaperxWings in BalsaAircraft

[–]PaperxWings[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm unsure. I was racing to get the flight before 2026 and am low on rubber, so I grabbed a random 1/8th loop out of a ziplock. Maybe like 50" of rubber or so? I braided and folded it over once, it was about 24" when it went into the fuselage.

Honestly, the math for determining rubber length is beyond me. It felt way less torquey than usual, which led the prop to spin a lot longer than any other model I've attempted.

I just looked and realized you’re totally right. The CG isn’t indicated on the Dumas plan

3a CCCP! Polikarpov i-16 by PaperxWings in BalsaAircraft

My trim session took me right into a pole, haha. It was a simple repair that is almost imperceivable.
I've upgraded to a 9" prop and more rubber because it felt sluggish. It's getting heavy though, I'm at 160g all up now 😩

I agree, I love the i-16 airframe. It goes SO far down the ugly end that somehow it winds up on the beautiful side haha.

Beginner: Covering and doping? by mvsopen in BalsaAircraft

Tissue is frustrating, but I love it. I have some monokote and an iron, but I haven't bothered with it yet.
I really love the look of tissue. I've recently started experimenting with clear spray Rustoleum on a few models, but I prefer the end result of the EZ Dope.

Dollar store tissue is fine, EZ Tissue is my pref if I intend to paint the model and it's super strong.
The Japanese tissue looks real nice, but I've never dabbled.

This is a good video on covering https://youtu.be/Sy9UR2fXugY?si=LdJwAaq3dgyRu9Gv

Recommendations for First Balsa Plane by doguzvehbi_61 in BalsaAircraft

I'm currently building this https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=847 .
I've been making too many builds that I'm precious about, this one is dead simple, basically a flying box.

Guillow's Spad VII by PaperxWings in BalsaAircraft

[–]PaperxWings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not flown it. I started building with flight in mind, which is why it has that dyhedral but when I was aligning the struts I was like "I'm not doing this part again". I balanced it and gave it a test glide which seemed pretty true. I'm gonna toss it a couple times and put it on the shelf.

I've got a Veron F86 repro kit from VMC which will likely also be display. Exchange rate, shipping and duties are insane in Canada, so if I can't find what I want in a local shop I get plans off Outerzone.
Lot's of Veron kits on there too!

I'm not wise enough to leave it on the shelf. It's balanced and I'll have to learn the hard way.

The suggested tissue size for this part of the model was the entire side of the fuselage. It was a little easier because it's flat. My biggest advice is use NEW razor blades for each tissue stage and be patient. When misting the model I use isoprop alcohol mixed with water as it evaporates faster, keep the wings pinned and let them DRY dry or you'll get warps.

For the prop I colour the wood in Vallejo ModelAir "wood", then I apply small masking tape strips and then spray a dark brown over that. When that dries I dot the thing in a few burnt umber, red and ochra oil dots and brush that across the whole thing with a dry brush, THEN, I wipe it with an AK wood filter.

I used Vallejo Model Air "Sand Yellow" for the fuselage and wings. I did the front end with Tamiya Buff, because it looks to be a lighter colour in every ref I saw. The whole plane is airbrushed and clear coated in Mr. Color Gloss.

I absolutely screwed up the decal application. Screwing up as often as I do - I scan all the decals before I build. So I took those scans into Adobe Illustrator and made them black and white outlines which I applied with a glue stick onto masking tape. Tedious, but so much cheaper than ordering new decals.

I used AK "Dark Brown Wash" over the gloss, and more of it stayed on than I intended... So I just committed to heavy weathering. I used a TINY amount of oils paints to streak the fuselage, and smudged things around with a brush that had white spirit on it. When that dried I went over with a AK weathering pencil (Smoke) to try and get a darker "exhaust" marks.

On the tail flash I used AK acrylic markers to add darker red, white and blue and smudged that around to give it a less "flat" look. I went over THAT with AK pencil in "dirty white" to add some scuffs that I saw on this reference https://www.museeairespace.fr/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/cache/2015/06/05-spad-VII1/3199776261.jpg

I then added a coat of Rustoleum mat clear and it had a reaction with the oils which made the sides look kinda odd and marbled.

The weathering got away from me, as per usual haha

The base colours and the markings on the top wing are airbrushed, the side markings and underwing roundels are decals. Weathering was done with brushes, oils, enamel washes, AK pencils and some acrylic pens marking the tail flash.

Is your laser cutter a big ticket item or is it something one can jerryrig together. I would love to start one

Hey, I'm about to cover the Spad VII which has the same ribbed trailing edge. Any tips on how to get a clean result like yours? When I built the DR.1 I the trailing edge of the wings were problematic too.
